Independent 2. The 'rose of the Shires', in the East Midlands and in easy reach of both Birmingham and London. The county council hit severe financial difficulties in early 2018 over the capital cost of its new headquarters.

The council is likely to be abolished in 2020 as part of local government reorganisation. The Conservatives regained Oundle at a byelection on 21 February. The Secretary of State has appoint Commissioners to take over governance of the council.
