Here is the state of play on forthcoming local authority byelections.

- Gresham ward, Middlesbrough borough council, after the resignation of Labour councillor Tony Bishop. The term ends in 2011.
- Grove and Wantage division, Oxfordshire county council, caused by the death of Liberal Democrat Jim Moley. The seat lasts until 2009.
- Horsehay and Lightmoor ward, Telford and Wrekin council, following the resignation of Independent councillor Adam Pringle. The term ends in 2011.
- Marlborough ward, Harrow borough council, caused by the death of Labour councillor Dhirajlal Lavingia. The new councillor serves until 2010.
- Marton West ward, Middlesbrough borough council, after the death of Conservative councillor Terry Ward. The new councillor will serve until 2011.
- Queen’s Park ward, Brent borough council, caused by the resignation of Jean Tullett, one of the ward’s three Liberal Democrat councillors. The winner will serve to 2010.
- Wallingford division, Oxfordshire county council, caused by the resignation of Bill Bradshaw (Lord Bradshaw), a Liberal Democrat.The seat lasts until 2009.
- Wantage Charlton ward, Vale of White Horse district council, which is also caused by the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Jim Moley. This term lasts to 2011.
- Wrockwardine ward, Telford and Wrekin council, caused by the resignation of David Blackwell (Conservative). The term ends in 2011.

- Bedwell division, Hertfordshire county council after the death of Labour councillor Tanis Kent. The winner serves until 2009.
- Gooshays ward, Havering borough council, following the resignation of the British National Party councillor Alan Bailey. The winner serves until 2010.
- Pin Green ward, Stevenage borough council, also following the death of Labour councillor Tanis Kent. This seat lasts until 2010.
- Redwell West ward, Wellingborough borough council, following the resignation of Conservative councillor David Old. The winner serves until 2011.
- Vassall ward, Lambeth borough council, following the death of Labour councillor Liz Atkinson. This seat will last until 2010.
- Yapton ward, Arun district council, following the resignation of Christopher Forester (Conservative). The winner serves until 2011.

The following elections are likely to be postponed until 1 May when this year’s round of local elections will take place. Where authorities have elections on 1 May, no byelection is held to fill vacancies where the new councillor would have a term less than six months.
- Barnwood ward, Gloucester city council, vacant after the resignation of Phil Taylor, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in 2007 although he was sitting as a Conservative-supporting Independent at the time of his resignation.
- Hawks Green ward, Cannock Chase district council, vacant after the death of the Conservative deputy leader of the council Reg Butler.
- Netherton and Orrell ward, Sefton borough council, after the death of Labour group leader Dave Martin.
- St John’s ward, Rushmoor district council, vacant after the death of Graham Tucker of the Conservatives.
- St Mary’s ward, Adur district council, vacant following the death of Mike Howard (Conservative).
- Tanhouse ward, West Lancashire district council after the death of Labour councillor Sally Keegan.
- Walton ward, Peterborough city council, caused by the resignation of Liberal Democrat David Vellam.

There are known to be Conservative vacancies in Abbey division, Cheshire county council, after the resignation of Shirley Harris, in Morland ward of Eden district council, after the death of Derek Jackson, in Stowmarket North and Stowupland division, Suffolk county council after the resignation of Alastair Liddell, and in Water Park ward, Cotswold district council, following the resignation of Judith Aram.
Labour seats are vacant in Holmewood and Heath and Killamarsh West wards of North East Derbyshire district council, following the deaths of Terry Fisher and Colin Robinson respectively.
Brockworth division, Gloucestershire county council, is vacant following the resignation of Sean Connors of the Brockworth Residents Group. Sedgefield ward of Sedgefield borough council also has a vacancy caused by the death of Independent councillor Jim Wayman. The Scottish National Party have a vacancy in Troup ward, Aberdeenshire council, after the death of Mitchell Burnett.
No byelection
There are some seats vacant which will not be filled because the term of the councillor who caused the vacancy would have expired in May 2008.
- Hockley West ward, Rochford district council, vacant following the disqualification of Conservative councillor Liv Hungate for failing to attend any meetings in six months.
- Molesey North ward, Elmbridge borough council, following the death of Mick Burgess of the Molesey Residents’ Association.
- Scartho ward, North East Lincolnshire council, caused by the death of Conservative councillor Tony Rouse.
- Walkden South ward, Salford city council, following the resignation of Labour councillor Stan Witkowski.
- Walton North ward, Elmbridge borough council, caused by the disqualification of Alexander Nissen for failing to attend any meeting in the past six months.
- Wrenthorpe and Outwood West ward, Wakefield borough council, vacant after the resignation of Conservative councillor Anthony Calvert.
- Yew Tree ward, Liverpool city council, after the death of Bob Ousby of the Liberal Democrats.
