The outstanding byelection result of Thursday 7 February was a Liberal Democrat gain in Copnor ward of Portsmouth city council; the seat had previously been held by the Conservatives, but concern over the closure of a local fire station and over candidate selection have delivered a big vote shift. The result shores up the Liberal Democrat-led coalition which runs the city. The Liberal Democrats also gained Tavistock North ward on West Devon borough council from the Conservatives.

In Wiltshire the Liberal Democrats did less well, losing two seats on Wiltshire county council (one to the Conservatives and one to an Independent candidate). The Conservatives retained seats at Harpenden South West division of Hertfordshire county council, Bradwell South and Hopton ward of Great Yarmouth borough council, Marlow North and West ward of Wycombe district council, Victoria ward of Wyre borough council and Thornton Cleveleys Central division of Lancashire county council. However, they lost Roughton ward of East Lindsey district council to an Independent.

Labour retained Butt Lane ward of Newcastle-under-Lyme borough council.
