Liberal Democrats in the home of lost causes have managed to lose three of their own in recent months. First Paul Sargent went Independent, then Sajjad Malik joined Labour, and this week Dr Tia McGregor has resigned to sit as an independent. This leaves the minority Liberal Democrat group with only 16 out of the 48 seats on the council, dependent on support from the Green Party, the Independent Working Class Association, and its own former members.
