Forthcoming byelections in principal local authorities, and seats vacant, appear to be as follows:
18 June
- Inverclyde council: Ward 6 – Inverclyde South West, after the death of Ken Ferguson of the Scottish National Party. Term ends 2012, assuming the Scottish Local Government (Elections) Bill is passed by the Scottish Parliament.
- Stockton-on-Tees borough council: Ingleby Barwick West ward, after the disqualification of Lee Narroway (then of the Ingleby Barwick Independent Society) who has been sentenced to a term of 26 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for two years. Term ends 2011.
25 June
- Angus council: Monifieth and Sidlaw ward, after the death of Scottish National Party councillor Frank Ellis. Term ends 2012, assuming the Scottish Local Government (Elections) Bill is passed by the Scottish Parliament.

- Derbyshire county council: Kirk Hallam division, not a byelection but part of the county council elections postponed from 4 June due to the death of a candidate. In 2005 the division was won by Labour. Term ends 2013.
- Erewash borough council: Abbotsford ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Mike Sherwood. Term ends 2011.
- Warwickshire county council: Arbury and Stockingford division, after the resignation of newly-elected Conservative Tom Wilson who was employed by the authority at the time of his nomination and therefore disqualified. He has since resigned and will defend his seat at the byelection. Term ends 2013.

- Brent borough council: Wembley Central ward, after the disqualification of Vijay Shah who has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for fraud. Elected as a Liberal Democrat, he had been sitting as an Independent after he was charged. Term ends 2010.
- Broxtowe borough council: Brinsley ward, after Sadie Graham-Single was disqualified for failing to attend any meetings in six months. Originally elected for the British National Party, Mrs Graham-Single was expelled from the party in December 2007 and had been sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2011.
- Cambridgeshire county council: Ramsey division, not a byelection but part of the 4 June elections which had to be postponed due to the death of a candidate. In 2005 the division was won by the Liberal Democrats. Term ends 2013.
- Cheltenham borough council: All Saints ward, after the death of Tina Franklin (Liberal Democrat). Term ends May 2010.
- Daventry district council: Drayton ward, after the disqualification of Terry Mullett who has been sentenced to 18 weeks’ imprisonment for benefit fraud; background checks also revealed that he was disqualified from election. He was a Conservative when first elected but had recently been sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2011.
- Forest of Dean district council: Mitcheldean and Drybrook ward, after the death of George Read MBE, who sat as an Independent councillor for over 40 years. Term ends 2011.
- Huntingdonshire district council: Ramsey ward, after the death of Ray Powell of the Liberal Democrats. Term ends 2011.
- Lichfield borough council: Whittington ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Colin Ablitt. Term ends 2011.
- North Tyneside borough council: Preston ward, after Conservative councillor Linda Arkley was elected Mayor of North Tyneside. Term ends 2011.
- Redcar and Cleveland council: Dormanstown ward, after the death of Labour councillor Cliff Houlding. Term ends 2011.
- St Helens borough council: Moss Bank ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Anne Heyes. Term ends 2011.
- Scarborough borough council: Hertford ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Chambers. Term ends 2011.
- Scarborough borough council: Streonshalh ward, after the resignation of Rob Broadley of the Liberal Democrats. Term ends 2011.
- South Holland district council: Spalding St Johns ward, after the impending resignation of Wayne Seaborn who was elected as a Conservative but is sitting as an Independent councillor. Term ends 2011.
- Stockport borough council: Reddish North ward, after the death of Labour councillor David Owen. Term ends 2011.
- Tameside borough council: Denton North East ward, after the death of veteran Labour councillor Martin Wareing. Term ends 2012.
- Torridge district council: Holsworthy ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Des Shadrick. Term ends 2011.
- West Lindsey district council: Saxilby ward, after the resignation of Jackie Brockway (Liberal Democrat). Term ends 2011.
- Wyre Forest borough council: Lickhill ward, after the death of Jill Fairbrother-Millis of the Kidderminster Hospital and Health Concern group. Term ends 2011.
