The latest information about local electoral matters is as follows:

East of England

East Midlands

  • Charnwood borough council: James Poland was elected councillor for Wreake Villages ward on 12 September, holding the seat for the Conservative Party. There is a byelection on 24 October in Shepshed West ward after the death of Conservative councillor and former Mayor Bernard Burr. There is a further seat vacant in Loughborough Hastings ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Litu Choudhury. Both terms end in 2015.
  • East Lindsey district council: Neil Jones was elected councillor for Frithville ward on 12 September. He gains for the Conservative Party a seat previously held by the East Lindsey Independent Group. There is also a byelection on 3 October in Chapel St Leonards ward after the resignation of East Lindsey Independent Group councillor Philip Leivers. Term ends 2015.
  • Harborough district council: Vacancy in Bosworth ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Brian Smith. Term ends 2015.
  • Lincolnshire county council: Chris Pain, who was elected for the UK Independence Party in Wainfleet and Burgh division, has left the party to set up a separate ‘UKIP Lincolnshire’ group on the council. Five other councillors previously in the UK Independence Party group have joined him: John Beaver (Gainsborough Hill division), Richard Fairman (Spalding East and Moulton division), Alan Jesson (Spalding South division), Tiggs Keywood-Wainwright (Boston North West division), and Bob McAuley (Boston West division). As a result the Labour group is now the official opposition on the council.
  • Rutland county council: Marc Oxley, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Uppingham ward, has joined the Green Party.

London

  • Brent borough council: Impending vacancy in Dudden Hill ward where Liberal Democrat councillor Rev David Clues has said he is intending to resign in November (within six months of a full council election). He has been living and working in Brighton since December 2011.
  • Harrow borough council: The Conservative group has requisitioned a special meeting of the council for Monday 16 September to call for a change of leadership. They have since May been supporting the Harrow Independent Labour Group administration who have only eight councillors, and a change of leadership is therefore possible. The Independent Labour Group are very unhappy that the meeting was called by the council’s Director of Legal Services (although the Director’s action appears to be required under paragraph 3(2), schedule 12 to the Local Government Act 1972).
