Lib Dems get a Chelmsford 1-2

The latest information about local electoral matters is as follows:

East Midlands

  • Blaby district council: Samantha Maxwell was elected councillor for Ravenhurst and Fosse ward on 28 June, holding the seat for the Labour Party.
  • Charnwood borough council: Kenneth Jones, of the Conservative Party, was elected councillor for Sileby ward on 28 June. He held the seat for his party.
  • Chesterfield borough council: Byelection on 5 July in St Helen’s ward after the death of Labour councillor Trevor Reynolds. Term ends 2015.
  • Corby borough council: Byelection on 12 July in East ward after the death of Labour councillor and former council leader Pat Fawcett. Term ends 2015.
  • Lincolnshire county council: Byelection on 2 August in Lincoln East division after the resignation of Conservative councillor Sara Cliff, who was under criticism for her poor attendance record since moving to Cambridgeshire. Term ends 2013.
  • South Holland district council: There are two byelections on 2 August. The byelection in Fleet ward is caused by the resignation of Conservative councillor Shaun Keeble; the byelection in Long Sutton ward arises after the death of veteran Independent councillor Dennis Tennant. Both terms end in 2015.
  • South Northamptonshire district council: Tharik Jainu-Deen was elected councillor for Grange Park ward on 28 June, holding the seat for the Conservative Party.

East of England

  • Breckland district council: There is a byelection on 19 July in Queen’s ward in Attleborough after the resignation of Conservative councillor Simon Rogers, who has moved to Cornwall; there are another two byelections on 26 July. The first is in Harling and Heathlands ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Lady Kay Fisher, whose husband has a financial link with the Crown Estate who are putting forward development plans in the district. The second is in Mid Forest ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Bernard English due to ill health. All terms end in 2015.
    Meanwhile Carl Clark (Thetford Abbey ward), who had announced last week that he would seek re-election as an Independent after leaving the Labour group, has recanted and decided he will not now be standing down.
  • Central Bedfordshire council: Vacancy in Stotfold and Langford ward after the death of Conservative councillor Jon Clarke. Term ends 2015.
  • Chelmsford borough council: Paul Bentham was elected councillor for Patching Hall ward on 28 June, holding the seat for the Liberal Democrats.
  • Essex county council: Stephen Robinson was elected county councillor for Chelmsford North division on 28 June; he held the seat for the Liberal Democrats.
  • Maldon borough council: Byelection on 5 July in Tollesbury ward after the death of Conservative councillor Russell Porter. Term ends 2015.
  • Tendring district council: Vacancy in St Bartholomews ward after the resignation of Independent councillor Chris Cowlin, who was sponsored by the Holland Residents’ Association. He was elected only in March but has found that he cannot fulfil all the duties of a councillor. Term ends 2015.

North West

  • Burnley borough council: Vacancy in Trinity ward after the death of Labour councillor and former Mayor Tony Lambert. Term ends 2016.
  • Fylde borough council: Byelection on 5 July in Heyhouses ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Peter Wood. Term ends 2015. His resignation removes, at least temporarily, the Conservative overall majority.
  • Liverpool city council: There are two byelections on 5 July. Allerton and Hunts Cross ward will elect a councillor after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Vera Best, who has since died. Riverside ward will elect the councillor successor of Joe Anderson, the Labour Party group leader, who was elected Mayor in May. Both terms end in 2014.

Yorkshire and the Humber

  • Calderdale borough council: Byelection on 19 July in Warley ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Keith Hutson. Term ends in 2015. There is an impending vacancy in Calder ward as another Liberal Democrat councillor, Nader Fekri, is moving to Turkey to join his wife; his term is due to end in 2014.
