The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Result
- North Devon: The byelection in Instow ward held on 9 January was won by Becky Coombs. Liberal Democrat gain from Conservative.
Defections
- Havant: Jonathan Hulls, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Hayling West ward, has joined the Green Party.
- Hertfordshire: Sunny Thusu, who was elected for the Conservatives in Haldens division, has had the Conservative whip withdrawn after a medical tribunal decision, and is sitting as an Independent county councillor.
- Hounslow: Guy Lambert, who was elected for the Labour Party in Brentford West ward but had the whip suspended last November, has announced he has left the party for good and will continue to sit as an Independent councillor.
- New Forest: Neville Penman, who was elected for the Conservatives in Totton North ward, has left the party to sit as a non-aligned councillor.
- Nottinghamshire: Dr John Doddy, who was elected for the Conservatives in Stapleford and Broxtowe Central division but left the party in June 2024 when he stood as an Independent in the general election, has joined Reform UK.
- Oldham: Graham Sheldon, who was elected as a Conservative in Saddleworth South ward and was leader of the group, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor after a dispute within the group became public at a council meeting.
- Somerset: Bente Height, who was elected for the Conservatives in Shepton Mallet division, has left the party to sit as an ungrouped councillor.
- Tendring: Nick Turner, who was elected for Tendring First in Frinton ward and had been a member of the Tendring Independents group, has become an ungrouped councillor.
- Welwyn Hatfield: Sunny Thusu, who was elected for the Conservatives in Welwyn West ward, has had the Conservative whip withdrawn after a medical tribunal decision, and is sitting as an Independent councillor.
New vacancies
- Barnet: Burnt Oak ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Ammar Naqvi, who had been suspended from the Labour whip immediately before his resignation. Term ends 2026.
- Buckinghamshire: Chalfont St Peter ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Jonathan Rush. His term was due to end in May so no byelection will follow.
- Hammersmith and Fulham: Hammersmith Broadway ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Emma Apthorp. Term ends 2026.
- Hammersmith and Fulham: Lillie ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Ben Coleman, now Member of Parliament for Chelsea and Fulham. Term ends 2026.
- Lincoln: Park ward, after the death of Labour councillor Sue Burke. Term ends 2027.
- North Kesteven: Bracebridge Heath ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Peter Burley. Term ends 2027.
- Thurrock: Ockendon ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Ryan Polston, who has taken a politically neutral post. His term is currently due to end in May so no byelection will be held.
Dates for byelections
- Barnet: The byelection due in Burnt Oak ward will be held on 13 February.
- Colchester: The byelection due in Tiptree ward will be held on 20 February.
- Pembrokeshire: The byelection due in Haverfordwest Prendergast division will be held on Tuesday 11 February.
- Warwick: The byelection due in All Saints and Woodloes ward will be held on 13 February.
Other updates
- Multiple requests have been made by county councils (and by Thurrock unitary council) to postpone elections due in May, due to impending reorganisation. The MHCLG has noted that it has not taken any decision on postponing elections and warned against speculation that applications will be approved.
