The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Result
- Lancaster: The byelection in Ellel ward held on 19 May was won by Sally Maddocks. Green Party gain from Conservative.
Changes of allegiance
- Blaenau Gwent: Carl Bainton, who was elected as an Independent in Ebbw Vale South ward, has joined the Labour Party.
- Breckland: Roy Brame, who was elected for the Conservatives in Thetford Castle ward but left the party in March last year, has now returned.
- East Riding of Yorkshire: Charlie Bayram, who was elected for the Conservatives in Howden ward, has joined the Liberal Democrats.
- East Staffordshire: Colin Whittaker, who was elected for the Conservatives in Abbey ward, has left the party and is sitting as an Independent councillor.
- Hartlepool: Ged Hall, who was elected as an Independent in Burn Valley ward, has joined the Labour Party.
- Hyndburn: Two further councillors have left the Labour group to sit as Independent councillors. They are Caroline Montague (Barnfield ward) and Paddy Short (Peel ward). Their moves remove Labour’s overall majority.
- Maidstone: Nick de Wiggondene-Sheppard, who was elected for the Conservatives in Detling and Thurnham ward but left them in October 2020 to sit as a Liberal Democrat, has now returned to the Conservatives. His move means they regain an overall majority. Meanwhile the Maidstone Group, two ungrouped Independents and the Green Party councillor have all joined the Independent group.
- North Norfolk: Georgie Perry-Warnes, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Holt ward, has left the party to sit as an ungrouped Independent councillor.
- Plymouth: Five councillors who previously left the Conservative group and were sitting as Independents have been readmitted, giving the party a majority once again. The returnees are Linda Bowyer (Eggbuckland ward), Shannon Burden (Moor View ward), Nigel Churchill (Plymstock Dunstone ward), Stephen Hulme (Ham ward), and Kathy Watkin (Plymstock Radford ward). Meanwhile George Wheeler, who was elected for the Labour Party but left it in May last year, has now joined the Green Party.
- Rushcliffe: Ben Gray, who was elected for the Labour Party in Lutterell ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Ryedale: William Oxley, who was elected as a Conservative in Thornton Dale ward, has left the party to sit as an ungrouped Independent councillor.
- Selby: Dave Brook, who was elected for the Yorkshire Party in Sherburn in Elmet ward, has joined the Labour Party. Meanwhile Neil Reader, who was elected as a Conservative in Escrick ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- South Derbyshire: Michael Dawson (Woodville ward) and Martin Fitzpatrick (Melbourne ward), who both left the Conservative group to sit as Independents in January 2021, have now returned to the party.
- South Norfolk: Three councillors elected as Conservatives have left the party to sit as Independents. They are Michael Edney (Hempnall ward), together with Clayton Hudson (Beck Vale, Dickleburgh and Scole ward) and Joshua Worley (Stratton ward) who object to moving the council headquarters.
- Teignbridge: The ‘Newton Says No’ group of three councillors have been remamed the South Devon Alliance, and have added Adrian Patch (Haytor ward) who was previously an ungrouped Independent.
New vacancies
- Coventry: Binley and Willenhall ward, after the death of former Labour council leader John Mutton. Term ends 2026.
- Hackney: De Beauvoir ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Tom Dewey. Term ends 2026.
- Mole Valley: Charlwood ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Charles Yarwood. Term ends 2023.
- Ryedale: Thornton Dale ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Chris Delaney. Term ends when the authority is abolished in April next year.
- Warwickshire: Arden division, after the death of Conservative councillor John Horner. Term ends 2025.
Dates for byelections
- Buckinghamshire: The byelection due in Bernwood division will be held on 30 June.
- East Riding of Yorkshire: The byelection due in Bridlington North ward will be held on 30 June.
- Kingston-upon-Thames: The postponed poll in New Malden Village will take place on 23 June.
- Middlesbrough: The byelection due in Berwick Hills and Pallister ward will be held on 30 June.
- Mole Valley: The byelection due in Charlwood ward will be held on 7 July.
- Newark and Sherwood: The byelection due in Ollerton ward will be held on 30 June.
- Shropshire: The byelection due in Highley division will be held on 23 June.
Other updates
- Aberdeen: A partnership administration between the Scottish National Party and Liberal Democrats has taken control of the council.
- Aberdeenshire: The council will be run by a Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Independent coalition.
- Argyll and Bute: The council control will continue to be held by The Argyll, Lomond and the Islands Group, consisting of Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and Independent councillors.
- Bolton: The Conservatives will continue to run the council as a minority group.
- Castle Point: The council is now run by a coalition of the Canvey Island Independent Party and the People’s Independent Party.
- Conwy: A new administration has been formed, consisting of the Conwy First Independent Group, Labour and Plaid Cymru.
- East Ayrshire: The new council will be East Dunbartonshire: The Scottish National Party has formed a minority administration, with support from Labour.
- Fife: The council will be run by a Labour minority administration after the party secured support from the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives.
- Glasgow: The Scottish National Party minority administration will continue, after the Scottish Green Party group pledged support.
- Huntingdonshire: A coalition has been formed to take over the council by the Liberal Democrats, Labour, Independent and Green Party councillors.
- Inverclyde: The council will be run by a minority Labour administration.
- Monmouthshire: The Labour Party will form the administration on the council.
- Moray: A minority Conservative administration has taken control although with some concern that it may not last long.
- North Ayrshire: It has been decided that a minority Scottish National Party administration will run the council.
- North Lanarkshire: The Scottish National Party has taken control of the council and will be a minority administration.
- Plymouth: The Conservatives have regained majority control of the council.
- Renfrewshire: After agreeing a deal with an Independent councillor, the Scottish National Party will form a minority administration.
- Scottish Borders: A Conservative-Independent administration has been formed.
- Sheffield: At one stage it looked like the council would be left without a leader but eventually a Labour councillor was elected. The council now uses the committee system and chairs will come from Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party.
- South Ayrshire: A Conservative minority administration has taken over running the council.
- South Lanarkshire: A partnership agreement with the Liberal Democrats and Independents has led to a Labour administration taking control.
- Southend-on-Sea: The partnership between Labour, Liberal Democrats and Independents will continue, although under a new council leader.
- Stirling: After coming to an agreement with the Conservatives, the council will be run by a Labour administration.
- Stockport: The Liberal Democrats have taken over the council administration.
- Swale: The council has changed over to the committee system.
- West Lancashire: Labour will continue to run the council as a minority administration.
- West Oxfordshire: As noted last week, a Liberal Democrat/Labour/Green Party coalition has taken control of the council.
- Wokingham: After coming to agreement with the Labour and Green Parties, the Liberal Democrats will lead the council.
- Worcester: A chaotic annual meeting saw the Green Party refuse Labour’s invitation to form a ‘progressive alliance’, and Labour refuse the offer to nominate a co-leader of the council. Accordingly the Conservatives will lead the council.
