Stroud Conservatives avoid Edward II’s fate in Berkeley

The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Result

  • Stroud: The byelection in Berkeley Vale ward on 28 February was won by Lindsey Green. Conservative hold.

Changes of allegiance

New vacancies

  • Braintree: Hedingham ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Joanne Beavis. Her term would have ended in May and so she will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Durham: Shildon and Dene Valley division, after the death of Labour councillor Henry Nicholson. Term ends 2021.
  • Dundee: North East ward, after the death of Labour councillor Brian Gordon. Term ends 2022.
  • East Hampshire: Petersfield St Mary’s ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Nicky Noble. The term was due to end in May so no byelection will be held.
  • East Lothian: Haddington and Lammermuir ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Brian Smalls. Term ends 2022.
  • Havant: Hart Plain ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Gerald Shimbart. His term was due to end in May so no byelection will be held.
  • Havant: Purbrook ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Adam Christie. Term ends 2022.
  • Neath Port Talbot: Resolven division, after the death of Labour councillor and Cabinet member for Community Protection Des Davies. Term ends 2022.
  • Torridge: Winkleigh ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Betty Boundy. Her term would have ended in May so she will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Weymouth and Portland: Tophill West ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Kerry Baker. Her term would have ended when the council is abolished in April so no byelection will be held.

Dates for byelections

  • Burnley: The byelection due in Rosehill with Burnley Wood ward will be held on 11 April.
  • Norfolk: The byelection due in Wroxham division will be held on 4 April.

Other updates

  • Brighton and Hove: The Conservative group has summoned a meeting next week to attempt to depose the Labour leadership of the council, which they now outnumber. However the Labour group secured passage of its budget this week through an ad hoc deal with the Green Party, making it unlikely the Conservatives will succeed.
