The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Result
- Stroud: The byelection in Painswick and Upton ward held on 17 May was won by Gary Luff. Green Party gain from Conservative.
Changes of allegiance
- Cheshire West and Chester: Gill Watson, who was elected for the Labour Party in Newton and Hoole ward, has left the party to sit as a non-aligned Independent councillor.
- Cotswold: Chris Twells, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Tetbury with Upton ward, has been suspended from the party and is sitting as an Independent councillor.
- Fareham: Sarah Pankhurst, who was elected for the Conservative Party in Titchfield Common ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Hastings: Lucian Fernando, who was elected for the Conservatives in Silverhill ward but left the party in March, has now joined Reform UK.
- Maidstone: Michelle Hastie, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in North ward but left the party in October 2021, has joined the Conservative Party.
- Peterborough: Three councillors have left the Conservative group to join Peterborough First who sit in the Independent group. They are Peter Hiller (Glinton and Castor ward), together with Brian Rush and Ray Bisby (both Stanground South ward).
- Salford: Chris Twells, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Ordsall ward, has been suspended from the party. He was also elected to Cotswold district council in May. Twells has decided to rescind his previously announced intent to resign from Salford council.
- Sefton: Sinclair d’Albuquerque, who was elected for the Conservatives in Cambridge ward, but left the party to form the Southport Councillors Group in May 2022, has now joined the Liberal Democrats.
- Southend-on-Sea: Kathy Murphy, who was elected for the Labour Party in St Lukes ward, has left the party to sit as a non-aligned councillor.
- Stockport: Aron Thornley, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Marple South and High Lane ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Swindon: David Martyn, who was elected for the Conservatives in Wroughton and Wichelstowe ward but left the party in March, has now returned to it.
New vacancies
- Cambridge: King’s Hedges ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Alex Collis. Term ends 2027.
- Newham: Boleyn ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Cecilia Welsh. Term ends 2026.
- Newham: Wall End ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Luke Charters. Term ends 2026.
- Swindon: St Margaret and South Marston ward, after the death of Labour councillor Pam Adams. Term ends 2026.
- West Devon: Tavistock North ward, after the resignation of Green Party councillor Terry Wheeler. Term ends 2027.
Dates for byelections
- Bedford: The byelection due in Wyboston ward will be held on 29 June.
- South Lanarkshire: The byelection due in East Kilbride West ward will be held on 6 July.
- Southampton: The election in Coxford ward which was postponed from 4 May will be held on 22 June.
- West Devon: The byelection due in Tavistock North ward will be held on 22 June.
- West Lancashire: The election in Rural South ward which was postponed from 4 May will be held on 22 June.
Other updates
- Basingstoke and Deane: At the annual meeting the Conservative council leader was removed on a vote of 25-21. The leader of the Basingstoke and Deane Independent Group has formed a coalition with the Liberal Democrats and the Independent Forum to run the council.
- Bolton: A minority Labour administration has taken over.
- Brentwood: A coalition of Liberal Democrats and Labour has taken over control.
- Broadland: Late on Friday it was announced that agreement had been reached between Liberal Democrat, Labour and Green groups on a coalition to run the council.
- Canterbury: At the annual meeting a Labour and Liberal Democrat coalition has formed the administration.
- Cherwell: The annual meeting voted to remove the Conservative administration, but no alternative administration could get a majority as the ‘Progressive Oxforshire’ (Liberal Democrat, Green and Independent) group and Labour group were not in agreement. The meeting will resume on 23 May.
- East Hampshire: The Conservatives have come to a coalition agreement with the Whitehill and Bordon Community Party.
- East Hertfordshire: The Green Party and Liberal Democrats have formed a joint administration.
- East Riding of Yorkshire: There will be a minority Conservative administration.
- Elmbridge: A Liberal Democrat leader has taken over, in continuation of the coalition of Residents’ Association councillors and Liberal Democrats.
- Great Yarmouth: With support from the Independent councillors and no challenge from Labour, the Conservatives will continue to run the council as a minority administration.
- Harborough: A coalition of Liberal Democrats, Labour and Green Party will run the council.
- Hart: The long-standing coalition of the Liberal Democrats and Community Campaign Hart will continue to run the council.
- Hartlepool: As expected the Conservatives and Independent councillors have formed a coalition administration.
- Herefordshire: A Conservative leader has been elected with support from a non-aligned Independent councillor.
- Hertsmere: A coalition deal has seen Labour and the Liberal Democrats take control.
- Hyndburn: A minority Conservative administration has been chosen to run the council.
- King’s Lynn and West Norfolk: The Independent Partnership group of Independents, Liberal Democrats and Green Party have formed an administration, with support but not participation from Labour.
- Maldon: At the annual meeting a motion was carried to postpone decision on the council leadership until 8 June.
- Milton Keynes: The coalition between Labour and Liberal Democrats will continue to run the council.
- North Warwickshire: The Conservatives will continue to run the council as a minority administration with support from Dordon Independents.
- Pendle: A shared administration has been formed by Labour and the Liberal Democrats.
- Portsmouth: The minority Liberal Democrat administration will continue under a new leader.
- Rugby: The Conservatives will continue to run the council as a minority administration.
- Runnymede: After getting the support of the Independent councillors from Ottershaw ward, the Conservative administration will continue.
- Sheffield: The new administration has been formed. Labour will supply the leader and deputy leader but committee chairs will be drawn from all parties.
- Slough: After agreeing a Cooperation Agreement with the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives have formed an administration.
- South Kesteven: By a majority of one vote, the council has an Independent Leader at the head of a coalition with the Green Party and Liberal Democrats.
- Southend-on-Sea: The Labour leader has been removed and a Conservative administration elected.
- Stafford: Labour, Stafford Borough Independents and Greens have taken control after agreeing a coalition deal.
- Staffordshire Moorlands: After getting backing from the Independents Labour has formed an administration.
- Swale: A new coalition between Labour, Swale Independents and Green Party has been agreed to run the council.
- Tewkesbury: A coalition administration involving Liberal Democrats, Green Party, and Independents, has taken over.
- Tonbridge and Malling: A Conservative administration has been re-elected on the Mayor’s casting vote.
- Warwick: A Green Party and Labour joint administration has taken over control.
- Wokinghamy: A Liberal Democrat administration has been elected, with Labour support.
- Worcester: Labour failed to alter the constitution and as a result has had to take a joint leadership with the Green Party.
