The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Results
- Bristol: The byelection in Hotwells and Harbourside ward held on 2 February was won by Patrick McAllister. Green Party gain from Liberal Democrats.
- North Northamptonshire: The byelection in Northall ward held on 2 February was won by Keli Watts. Labour gain from Conservative.
- Torfaen: The byelection in Llantarnam ward held on 2 February was won by Jason O’Connell, who stood as an Independent candidate and succeeds another Independent councillor.
Changes of allegiance
- Argyll and Bute: Tommy Macpherson, who was elected as a Conservative in South Kintyre ward but went into opposition in December, has now left the group to sit as an Independent Unionist councillor.
- Carlisle: Chris Wills, who was elected for the Labour Party in Currock and Upperby ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Cumberland: Chris Wills, who was elected for the Labour Party in Upperby ward, has left it to sit as an Independent councillor. The authority remains a shadow one before formal reorganisation on 1 April.
- Forest of Dean: James Bevan (Lydney East ward) has left the Independent Alliance group and is now in the Independent group.
- Gravesham: Leslie Pearton, who was elected as an Independent in Higham ward, has returned to the Conservative Party where he began his council career.
- North Tyneside: The three councillors for St Mary’s ward, who were elected for the Conservative Party, have left the party to sit as Independent councillors in protest at the deselection of one of them. They are George Westwater, Pam McIntyre and Judith Wallace.
- Powys: Tom Colbert, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Bronllys and Felin-fach ward, has left the group and is sitting as a non-affiliated councillor.
- Southend-on-Sea: Mike Stafford, who was elected as an Independent in Thorpe ward, has left the Independent group and is sitting as a non-aligned councillor.
- Wakefield: The Wakefield Independent Group has been formed by Tony Homewood (Ossett ward) and Annemarie Glover (Wrenthorpe and Outwood West ward), both of whom left the Conservatives in November. Meanwhile Karl Johnson, who was elected for the Conservatives in Wakefield South ward, has left the party to join the Independent group. Also Paul Stockhill, who was elected for the Conservatives in Crofton, Ryhill and Walton ward, has joined the Wakefield and District Independents group outside the council.
New vacancies
- Allerdale: Moorclose and Mossbay ward, after the resignation of Allerdale Independents councillor Blain Sansom. The council will be abolished at the end of March so no byelection will be held.
- Barrow-in-Furness: Hindpool ward, after the death of Labour councillor Ann Thomson who was the leader of the council. The authority is to be abolished at the end of March so there will be no byelection.
- Blaby: Forest ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Clements. His term would have ended in May and his replacement will be elected then.
- Cumbria: Alston and East Fellside ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Claire Driver. Her term would have ended at the end of March when the authority is abolished, so no byelection follows.
- East Devon: Exmouth Halsdon ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Paul Millar, who was elected as an Independent. No byelection ensues as the full council election will be held on May.
- Fylde: Freckleton East ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Kiran Mulholland. His term was due to end in May so he will not be replaced.
- Gloucester: Westgate ward, after the impending resignation of Conservative councillor Dawn Melvin. Term ends 2024.
- Milton Keynes: Stantonbury ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Alex Walker. He would have faced re-election in May so no byelection follows.
- Westmorland and Furness: Old Barrow and Hindpool ward, after the death of Labour councillor Ann Thomson. Term ends 2027. The authority remains a shadow one before formal reorganisation on 1 April.
Dates for byelections
- South Cambridgeshire: The byelection due in Cottenham ward will be held on 16 March.
- Stirling: The byelection due in Dunblane and Bridge of Allan ward will be held on 16 March.
Other updates
- Nottingham: Following a report from the Improvement and Assurance Board, the Secretary of State has decided not to intervene further and appoint Commissioners to take over functions of the council.
