The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Changes of allegiance

  • Brent: It is noted that after a split lasting three and a half years, the two Conservative groups in Brent have finally reunited.
  • Highland: Calum MacLeod, who was elected for the Scottish National Party in Eilean a’ CheĆ² ward, has left the party to sit as a non-aligned councillor.

New vacancies

  • Basingstoke and Deane: Kempshott ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Rita Burgess. Term ends 2019.
  • Halton: Halton Castle ward, after the death of Labour councillor Arthur Cole. Term ends 2019.
  • North Norfolk: Worstead ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Glyn Williams for health reasons. Term ends 2019.
  • Portsmouth: Baffins ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Steve Hastings (who was elected for the UK Independence Party but joined the Conservatives in May 2015). As his term would have ended in May, he will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Reigate and Banstead: South Park and Woodhatch ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Simon Rickman. As his term was due to end in May, there will be no byelection.

Dates for byelections

  • Cornwall: The byelection due in Falmouth Smithick division will be held on 1 February.
  • Milton Keynes: The byelection due in Newport Pagnell North and Hanslope ward will be held on 18 January.
  • Isle of Wight: The byelection due in Central Wight division will be held on 25 January.
