The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Changes of allegiance
- East Hertfordshire: Ben Harris-Quinney, who was elected for the Conservative Party in Braughing ward, has been suspended from the party.
- Fife: Bill Brown, who was elected for the Scottish National Party in Glenrothes West and Kinglassie ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Highland: Linda Munro, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in North West and Central Sutherland ward, has left the group to sit as a non-aligned councillor.
- Newcastle-under-Lyme: David Stringer, who was elected for the Labour Party in Ravenscliffe ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- South Lanarkshire: Pat Lee, who was elected for the Scottish National Party in Clydesdale West ward, has joined Solidarity.
- Tendring: A Conservative offer of a coalition administration has split the UK Independence Party group. Nine councillors have formed the ‘Tendring UKIP’ group which has gone into coalition with the Conservatives, while the remaining 13 are in opposition.
New vacancies
- Derbyshire: Derwent Valley division, after the death of Conservative Party county councillor Mike Longden. Term ends 2017.
- Durham: Shotton and South Hetton division, after the death of vice-chair of the council and Labour councillor Robin Todd. Term ends 2017.
- Gwynedd: Morfa Nefyn division, after the resignation of Liz Saville Roberts, now Member of Parliament for Dwyfor Meirionnydd. Term ends 2017.
- Hastings: St Helens ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Matthew Lock. Term ends 2018.
- Kingston-upon-Thames: Grove ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Chrissie Hitchcock. Term ends 2018.
- Norfolk: Mile Cross division, after the resignation of Labour councillor Deborah Gihawi. Term ends 2017.
- North Lanarkshire: Wishaw ward, after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor Marion Fellows, now Member of Parliament for Motherwell and Wishaw. Term ends 2017.
- Richmond-upon-Thames: Hampton Wick ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Dr Tania Mathias, now Member of Parliament for Twickenham.
- Rother: Battle ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Martin Noakes, due to ill health. Term ends 2019.
- South Lanarkshire: Hamilton South ward, after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor Angela Crawley, now Member of Parliament for Lanark and Hamilton East. Term ends 2017.
- Wrexham: Llay division, after the death of Labour Party councillor Malcolm Taylor. Term ends 2017.
Dates for byelections
- Aberdeen: The byelection due in Hilton / Woodside / Stockethill ward will take place on 30 July.
- Aberdeen: The byelection due in Kincorth / Nigg / Cove ward will take place on 30 July.
- Cardiff: The byelection due in Pentyrch division will be held on Tuesday 30 June.
- East Sussex: The byelection due in Old Hastings and Tressell division will be held on 9 July.
- Hastings: The byelection due in Central St Leonards ward will be held on 9 July.
- Hastings: The byelection due in St Helens ward will be held on 9 July.
- Lincolnshire: The byelection due in Grantham Barrowby division will be held on 2 July.
- Richmond-upon-Thames: The byelection due in Hampton Wick ward will be held on 2 July.
Other news
- Aberdeenshire: The ruling ‘Aberdeenshire Alliance’ coalition, made up of Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Independents and Labour, has broken up with several Independent councillors and the two Labour members withdrawing support. It is expected that the Scottish National Party will take control at a special meeting on 8 June.
- Basildon: There will be a minority Conservative administration, after the Conservative leader appealed to Labour not to vote against him.
- Calderdale: Labour will form a minority administration on the council after the Liberal Democrat and Independent councillors abstained rather than support the Conservatives.
- Colchester: A Liberal Democrat/Labour/Independent administration has again been voted in.
- Forest of Dean: The Conservative leader has been elected as council leader, and has formed a minority administration.
- Lancaster: The Labour group leader has been elected council leader, and has formed a minority administration.
- Maidstone: The council has ended the cabinet system and returned to the committee system; the administration will be led by a Liberal Democrat with an Independent deputy leader.
- North East Lincolnshire: There will be a minority Labour administration.
- Redcar and Cleveland: The abstention of a single Independent councillor has allowed Labour to form a minority administration, defeating an attempt by a rainbow anti-Labour coalition to take control.
- South Somerset: The Liberal Democrats have retained control of the council in a minority administration, after winning the support of the Independent councillors.
- Stockport: The Liberal Democrats will continue to run a minority administration.
- Stoke-on-Trent: In line with the coalition deal agreed after the election, a City Independent/Conservative/UK Independence Party administration has been voted in.
- Tendring: A coalition deal has been agreed between the Conservatives, Independents and a breakaway group of UK Independence Party councillors who have formed the ‘Tendring UKIP’ group.
- Thurrock: Labour will continue to run a minority administration.
- Walsall: After winning support from the Liberal Democrat group, Labour will continue to run the council as a minority administration.
