The latest information about local council electoral matters is as follows:
- Derbyshire county council: Byelection on 7 July in Sawley division after the death of veteran Independent councillor Bill Camm. Term ends 2013.
- Mansfield district council: Vacancy in Park Hall ward after the death of Labour councillor Dorothy Beastall just a day after she was re-elected. Term ends 2015.
East of England
- Broxbourne borough council: Tony Siracusa was elected councillor for Cheshunt Central ward at the byelection on 30 June. He retains the seat for the Conservative Party.
- Essex county council: Former council leader Lord Hanningfield (Stock division) was jailed for nine months on 1 July as part of the Parliamentary expenses scandal. This sentence will disqualify him from the council if no appeal is lodged within 28 days. He was elected as a Conservative but had been sitting as an Independent.
- Norfolk county council: Byelection on 14 July in Old Catton division after the resignation of Conservative councillor Stuart Dunn. Term ends 2013.
- Enfield borough council: Byelection on 28 July in Bush Hill Park ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Eleftherios Savva, who is moving to Cyprus for family reasons. Term ends 2014.
- Harrow borough council: Byelection on 28 July in Stanmore Park ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Mark Versallion, now a cabinet member on Central Bedfordshire council. Term ends 2014.
- Islington borough council: Vacancy in St Peter’s ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Shelley Coupland. Term ends 2014.
- Southwark borough council: Byelection on 7 July in Peckham ward after the death of the Mayor of Southwark, Tayo Situ, who was a Labour councillor. Term ends 2014.
- Wandsworth borough council: Michael Ryder was elected councillor for Thamesfield ward on 30 June, holding the seat for the Conservative Party.

- Blackburn with Darwen council: Byelection on 28 July in Beardwood with Lammack ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Sheila Williams due to ill health. Term ends May next year.
- Rochdale borough council: Malcolm Bruce, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Heywood North ward, has joined the Labour Party due to his opposition to public spending cuts.
- Warrington council: Byelection on 28 July in Poulton North ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Sharon Wilson. Term ends May next year.
- Hampshire county council: Alan Weeks, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Totton North division, has joined the Green Party, citing broken pledges by the party nationally.
- Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council: Vacancy in Eton and Castle ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Liam Maxwell, who has been appointed as an adviser to the Government on technology. Term ends 2015.
- Wokingham council: Byelection on 21 July in Remenham, Wargrave and Ruscombe ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Claire Stretton, who has moved to Maidenhead and was elected as a councillor for Boyn Hill ward on the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead earlier this month. Term ends 2012.
- North Devon district council: Vacancy in Fremlington ward after the resignation of Independent councillor Joanne Bell due to ill health. Term ends 2015.
- North Somerset council: Vacancy in Backwell ward after the death of Independent councillor Tom Collinson. Term ends 2015.
- Purbeck district council: Byelection on 7 July in Lytchett Matravers ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Mark Gracey. Term ends 2014.
- Staffordshire county council: Byelection on 7 July in Churnet Valley division after the death of Conservative councillor Barrie Mycock. Term ends 2013.
- Wakefield borough council: Byelection on 7 July in Horbury and South Ossett ward after to the resignation of Conservative councillor Elizabeth Hick who is in poor health. Term ends 2014.
- Gwynedd county council: Byelection on 21 July in Glyder division after the death of Plaid Cymru councillor Dai Rees Jones. Term ends in May next year. If Plaid Cymru hold the seat, they will have an overall majority on the council.
- Torfaen county borough council: Byelection on Tuesday 26 July in Snatchwood division after the death of Independent councillor Tom Gould. Term ends 2012.
- Aberdeen city council: The uneasy situation of the council having two Conservative Party groups has ended. The two members of the former ‘Scottish Conservative Group’, Jim Farquharson (Hazlehead/Ashley/Queens Cross ward) and Alan Milne (Lower Deeside ward), have formed a new ‘Independent Alliance Group’ under the leadership of former Independent councillor Marie Boulton (also Lower Deeside ward). The former ‘Aberdeen Conservative Group’ consisting of Alan Donnelly (Torry/Ferryhill ward) and Jill Wisely (Airyhall/Broomhill/Garthdee ward) has become the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Group.
- East Dunbartonshire council: Duncan Cumming, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Bearsden North ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent because of his opposition to government welfare reforms.
- Edinburgh city council: Byelection on 18 August in City Centre ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor David Beckett, who is to attend a course at Harvard. Term ends May next year.
- North Ayrshire council: Vacancy in Saltcoats and Stevenston ward after the resignation of Labour councillor David Munn. Term ends May next year.
- Perth and Kinross council: Vacancy in Highland ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor Ken Lyall, who is disillusioned with party politics and is emigrating to Australia. Term ends May next year.
