The latest information about local council electoral matters is as follows:
- Derby city council: The Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition on the council will continue for another year, although under a new Conservative leader after the former leader Harvey Jennings (Spondon ward) was charged with assault. Jennings has been suspended by the Conservative group.
- Derbyshire county council: Byelection on 16 June in Eckington division after the resignation of Labour councillor Steve Pickering, who has taken a politically restricted post. There is also a vacancy in Sawley division after the death of veteran Independent councillor Bill Camm. Both terms end in 2013.
- Derbyshire Dales district council: Byelection on 23 June in Stanton ward after the sole candidate nominated for the full council elections withdrew. Term ends 2015.
- Mansfield district council: Vacancy in Park Hall ward after the death of Labour councillor Dorothy Beastall just a day after she was re-elected. Term ends 2015. Meanwhile Mick Colley, who was elected for the Labour Party in Bull Farm and Pleasley Hill ward, has left to establish the “March 2011, Labour Group” on the council.
- Rushcliffe borough council: Polling in Manvers ward has been postponed from 5 May to 16 June after the death of sitting Conservative councillor Wally Smith, who was a candidate for re-election.
- South Kesteven district council: The election in Deeping St James ward has been postponed from 5 May to 23 June after the death of sitting Liberal Democrat councillor Ken Joynson.
East of England
- Broxbourne borough council: Vacancy in Cheshunt Central ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Jason Brimson who has been arrested on suspicion of fraud. Term ends 2014.
- Essex county council: Byelection on 9 June in Chelmsford Central division after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Margaret Hutchon. Term ends 2013.
- Rochford district council: Byelection on 16 June in Hullbridge ward after the death of Conservative councillor Peter Robinson. Term ends 2012.
- Thurrock council: The Labour group will continue to run the council as a minority administration, after winning the support of Anne Cheale of the ‘Thurrock Concerned Conservatives’ group in knife-edge votes.
- Waveney district council: At the annual council meeting, the casting vote of the outgoing chairman ensured the election of another Conservative to the post; his casting vote then ensured the election of a Conservative minority administration.
- Harrow borough council: Byelection on 2 June in Canons ward after the death of veteran Conservative councillor John Cowan. There is an impending vacancy in Stanmore Park ward as Conservative councillor Mark Versallion is likely to resign following his election to Central Bedfordshire council where he is now a cabinet member. Both terms end in 2014.
- Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea: There are two byelections on 9 June, both due to the deaths of Conservative councillors. They are Dr Iain Hanham (husband of former council leader and now Government minister Baroness Hanham) in Brompton ward, and Andrew Dalton in Queen’s Gate ward. Both terms end in 2014.
- Southwark borough council: Byelection on 7 July in Peckham ward after the death of the Mayor of Southwark, Tayo Situ, who was a Labour councillor. Term ends 2014.
- Wandsworth borough council: Byelection on 30 June in Thamesfield ward due to the resignation of council leader Edward Lister, who has been appointed Chief of Staff to Boris Johnson and Deputy Mayor for Planning. Term ends 2014.
- Darlington borough council: Mark Burton, who was elected for the Labour Party in Harrowgate Hill ward, has been suspended from the group after being charged and remanded in custody.
- Newcastle-upon-Tyne city council: Two wards have had their elections postponed from 5 May to 16 June due to the deaths of candidates. They are Byker (where the sitting councillor is Labour) and Westerhope (where the Liberal Democrat candidate Neil Hamilton died on polling day).
- Stockton-on-Tees borough council: A Labour leader will run the council, in coalition with the Ingleby Barwick Independent Society.
- Carlisle city council: The incumbent Conservative council leader was re-elected by one vote at the annual meeting. He will lead a minority administration.
- Cheshire East council: The election in Crewe South division has been postponed to 16 June after the death of Betty Howell, a sitting Liberal Democrat councillor who was seeking re-election.
- Lancaster city council: The Labour and Green groups have made an agreement to form an administration; the Green councillors do not describe it as a coalition, but they will have seats in the executive.
- Isle of Wight council: Byelection on 23 June in Binstead and Fishbourne ward after the death of Conservative councillor Ivan Bulwer. Term ends 2013.
- Milton Keynes council: A minority Conservative administration has taken control of the council.
- Mole Valley district council: The Conservatives have agreed a deal with the Ashtead Independents to form an administration.
- Reading borough council: The casting vote of the Mayor elected a Labour leader of the council, who will run a minority administration for the next year.
- Wokingham council: Vacancy in Remenham, Wargrave and Ruscombe ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Claire Stretton, who has moved to Maidenhead and was elected as a councillor for Boyn Hill ward on the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead earlier this month. Term ends 2012.
- Purbeck district council: Byelection on 7 July in Lytchett Matravers ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Mark Gracey. Term ends 2014.
- South Gloucestershire council: Although they failed to win an overall majority, the Conservatives remain in control of the council in a minority administration.
- Stroud district council: Ray Apperley, a former Conservative councillor who was re-elected as an Independent in The Stanleys ward, has rejoined the Conservative group. His move gives the party an overall majority on the council.
- Taunton Deane borough council: A Conservative administration will continue to control the council after the elections in which they won exactly half the seats.
- Torbay council: Byelection on 23 June in Cockington with Chelston ward after the election of Conservative councillor Gordon Oliver as Mayor of Torbay. Term ends 2015.
- Torridge district council: Conservative councillors were elected Leader and Deputy Leader of the council at the annual meeting.
- Birmingham city council: The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition which has run the council since 2004 will continue for a further year.
- Cannock Chase district council: There will be a Labour minority administration controlling the council for the next year.
- Newcastle-under-Lyme borough council: The election in Seabridge ward has been postponed from 5 May to 23 June after the death of a candidate.
- Staffordshire county council: Byelection on 16 June in Burton Town division after the death of Labour councillor Peter Beresford, who had previously announced his resignation due to ill health. Churnet Valley division is vacant after the death of Conservative councillor Barrie Mycock. Both terms end in 2013.
- Staffordshire Moorlands district council: The Conservative and Independent Alliance will continue to run the council, as in the previous term.
- Walsall borough council: The Conservatives will run the council as a minority administration
- Wychavon district council: Byelection on 23 June in Elmley Castle and Somerville ward after no candidates were nominated in the full council elections.
- Bradford city council: A Labour minority administration has again been formed after the Conservative group decided not to attempt to form a coalition to challenge it.
- Calderdale borough council: The local Liberal Democrat-Labour alliance will continue for the next year. The two parties have the same number of seats but it has been agreed that the Liberal Democrat leader will be council leader. Robert Pearson, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Warley ward, left the group in March and is sitting as an Independent Liberal Democrat.
- Kirklees borough council: A Labour minority administration will continue for the next year.
- North East Lincolnshire council: A Labour minority administration has taken power in this authority.
- Sheffield city council: Frank Taylor, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Gleadless Valley ward but left the party in March 2010, has joined the Labour Party.
- Wakefield borough council: Byelection on 7 July in Horbury and South Ossett ward after to the resignation of Conservative councillor Elizabeth Hick who is in poor health. Term ends 2014.
- Conwy county borough council: Byelection on 16 June in Uwchaled division after the death of Plaid Cymru councillor Wil Charles Edwards. Term ends 2012.
- Gwynedd county council: Byelection on 16 June in Arllechwedd division after the death of John Robert Jones of the Liberal Democrats. There is also a vacancy in Glyder division after the death of Plaid Cymru councillor Dai Rees Jones. Both terms end in 2012.
- Torfaen county borough council: Vacancy in Snatchwood division after the death of Independent councillor Tom Gould. Term ends 2012.
- Aberdeen city council: Byelection on 23 June in Airyhall/Broomhill/Garthdee ward after the resignation of Scott Cassie, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat but sitting as an Independent after being charged with fraud. Term ends 2012.
- Dumfries and Galloway council: Byelection on 16 June in Abbey ward after the resignation of Conservative Party councillor Michael Thomson.
- Falkirk council: Byelection on 9 June in Bo’ness and Blackness ward after the death of Scottish National Party councillor John Constable. Term ends 2012.
- Highland council: Byelection in Tain and Easter Ross ward on 9 June, after the death of Alan Torrance who was elected as an Independent but had joined the Scottish National Party group. Term ends 2012.
