The latest information about other local council electoral matters is as follows:

East Midlands

  • No updates this week.

East of England

London

  • Haringey borough council: Matt Davies, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Fortis Green ward, has resigned from the party due to his opposition to the Coalition government’s policy on student support. He will sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Tower Hamlets borough council: Byelection on 16 December in Spitalfields and Banglatown ward after the disqualification of Lutfur Rahman on election as Mayor of Tower Hamlets. He had been elected for the Labour Party but was expelled when he stood as an Independent against the Labour candidate for Mayor.

North East

  • Stockton-on-Tees borough council: There are three vacancies. First, Billingham East ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Alex Cunningham, now MP for Stockton North. Second, Ingleby Barwick East ward, caused by the resignation of Ingleby Barwick Independent Society member Andrew Larkin. Third, Mandale and Victoria ward, after the death of councillor Allison Trainer, who was a member of the Thornaby Independent Association. All three terms end in May 2011.

North West

South East

  • Arun district council: Vacancy in Barnham ward after the resignation of Independent councillor Melissa Briggs who has moved out of the district. As her term was due to end in May 2011, there will be no byelection.
  • Ashford borough council: Vacancy in Kennington ward after the death of Conservative councillor Major John Kemp. As his term was due to end in May 2011, there will be no byelection.
  • Dover district council: Byelection on 16 December 2010 in Lydden and Temple Ewell ward after the death of Conservative councillor Roger Frayne. Term ends May 2011.
  • Fareham borough council: Nick Gregory, candidate of the Liberal Democrats, was elected councillor for Fareham West ward on 9 December. He gains the seat from the Conservatives.
  • Kent county council: Byelection on 16 December in Dover Town division following the death of Roger Frayne. Another byelection is on 20 January 2011 in Tonbridge division following the death of Godfrey Horne MBE. There is also a vacancy in Romney Marsh division following the death of Willie Richardson. All three were Conservatives and both terms end in 2013.
  • New Forest district council: Vacancy in Marchwood ward after the death of Conservative councillor Alan Shotter. Term ends May 2011; as his death occurred more than six months before the end of the term, there may be a byelection.
  • Shepway district council: Vacancy in Lydd ward after the death of Conservative councillor Willie Richardson. As the vacancy has occurred within six months of the day on which his term was due to end in May 2011, there will be no byelection.
  • Thanet district council: Vacancy in Bradstowe ward after the disqualification of Ewen Cameron who was elected as a Conservative but was last sitting as an Independent after resigning the whip. As his term was due to end in May 2011, there will be no byelection.
  • Tunbridge Wells district council: Byelection on 16 December in Sherwood ward after the death of Conservative councillor Ted Jolley. Term ends 2014.
  • Winchester city council: Byelection on 27 January 2011 in Oliver’s Battery and Badger Farm ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor David Spender. Term ends 2012. The Liberal Democrats will lose their overall majority if they fail to keep the seat.
  • Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead: Byelection on 6 January 2011 in Park ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Richard Gard who has moved out of the borough. Term ends May 2011.

South West

West Midlands

  • Bromsgrove borough council: Byelection on 16 December in Marlbrook ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor George Lord. Lord’s sudden resignation was prompted by allegations of inappropriate behaviour to members of staff. Term ends May 2011.
  • Solihull borough council: Byelection on 20 January 2011 in Olton ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Honor Cox. Term ends 2012. The Liberal Democrat/Labour coalition which runs Solihull may be endangered if the Conservatives win.
  • Stoke-on-Trent city council: The neverending game of musical chairs has continued. This week Janine Bridges, who was elected as a City Independent in Chell and Packmoor ward, then joined the Community Voice group, has joined the Labour group. Meanwhile Roy Naylor (Blurton ward), who was elected as a City Independent group councillor, has been expelled from the group and now sits as a non-aligned councillor. The composition of Stoke city council is now Labour 27, City Independents 8, Conservative and Independent Alliance 8, British National Party 5, Community Voice 5, Liberal Democrats 4, Libertarian Party 1, Non-aligned Christian Independent 1, Non-aligned 1.
  • Worcestershire county council: Byelection on 16 December in Alvechurch division after the resignation of Conservative councillor George Lord. Lord’s sudden resignation (he was leader of the council at the time) was prompted by allegations of inappropriate behaviour to members of staff. Term ends 2013.

  • Angus council: Byelection on 3 February 2011 in Carnoustie and district ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor Ralph Palmer. Term ends 2012.
