The latest information about other local council electoral matters is as follows:

East Midlands

East of England

London

North East

  • Durham county council: Byelection on 30 September in Brandon ward, after the death of Labour councillor Ronnie Rodgers. A fortnight later on 14 October there will be a byelection in Deneside ward after the death of Labour former council leader Albert Nugent. Both terms end in 2013.
  • Gateshead borough council: There are two byelections on 23 September. That in Lobley Hill and Bensham ward comes after the death of Labour councillor and former Mayor Frank Donovan and the term ends May 2011. That in Saltwell ward comes after the resignation of Labour councillor Ian Mearns, now Member of Parliament for Gateshead, and the term ends in 2012.
  • Middlesbrough borough council: Bill Hawthorne, who stood as an Independent candidate, was elected councillor for Ayresome ward on 9 September. The seat he won had originally been won by another Independent who had later defected to Labour.
  • North Tyneside borough council: Byelection on 30 September in Battle Hill ward following the resignation of Labour councillor Mary Glindon, now MP for North Tyneside. Term ends May 2011.
  • Northumberland county council: Vacancy in Ponteland East division after the death of Conservative councillor Mel Armstrong. Term ends 2013.
  • Stockton-on-Tees borough council: There are two vacancies. That in Ingleby Barwick East ward is caused by the resignation of Ingleby Barwick Independent Society member Andrew Larkin. That in Mandale and Victoria ward comes after the death of councillor Allison Trainer, who was a member of the Thornaby Independent Association. Both terms end in May 2011.

North West

  • Blackburn with Darwen council: Following the recent break-up in the For Darwen Party, an emergency council meeting will be held on Tuesday 14 September at which the Labour Group will attempt to take over the council. The Mayor of Blackburn, Conservative councillor Sheila Williams, is ill and will not be present.
  • Carlisle city council: Byelection on 16 September in Stanwix Urban ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor John Stevenson, now MP for Carlisle. Term ends 2012.
  • Cheshire East council: Byelection on 30 September in Alderley ward after the death of Conservative councillor Liz Gilliland. Term ends May 2011.
  • Cumbria county council: Mike Johnson, the Conservative Party candidate, was elected councillor for Aspatria and Wharrels division on 9 September, holding the seat for his party.
  • Fylde borough council: Karen Henshaw, of the Liberal Democrats, was elected councillor for Kilnhouse ward on 9 September, gaining the seat from the Conservatives.
  • Knowsley borough council: Byelection on 16 September in Park ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Margaret Dobbie. Term ends May 2011.
  • Lancaster city council: Byelection on 7 October in Harbour ward after the death of Morecambe Bay Independent councillor John Barnes. Term ends May 2011.
  • Liverpool city council: Vacancy in Croxteth ward, after the death of Labour councillor and Deputy Lord Mayor Rose Bailey. There is expected to be a double vacancy election due to the impending resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Phil Moffatt who is moving to Northern Ireland. Terms end 2011 and 2012.
  • Preston city council: Byelection on 16 September in Cadley ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Mike Onyon. Term ends 2012.
  • Rossendale borough council: There are two byelections on 7 October. In Healey and Whitworth ward, Labour councillor Roger Wilson has resigned from a term due to end in May 2011; in Irwell ward, Conservative councillor Michael Christie has resigned from a term due to end in 2014, for health reasons.
  • St Helens borough council: There is a byelection on 14 October in Billinge and Seneley Green ward, following the death of Richard Ward. There is also a vacancy in Haydock ward following the death of the longest serving councillor in the country, Jim Caunce. Both were Labour councillors and were serving in terms due to end in 2012.
  • Tameside borough council: Byelection on 30 September in Longdendale ward after the death of Labour councillor Roy Oldham, who was leader of the council for 30 years. Term ends 2014. The byelection is likely to be held on 30 September.
  • Wyre borough council: Byelection on 7 October in Tithebarn ward after the death of Conservative councillor Peter Hawley. Term ends May 2011.

South East

  • Chiltern district council: Vacancy in Ashley Green, Latimer and Chenies ward after the death of Conservative councillor Graham Sussum. Term ends May 2011.
  • Crawley borough council: Byelection on 7 October in Tilgate ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Lawrence Taylor due to work commitments. Term ends 2012.
  • Elmbridge borough council: There are two vacancies. That in Hersham North is for a term ending in 2012 and arises from the resignation of Conservative councillor Doug Packer, who is moving out of the borough; that in St George’s Hill ward is for a term ending May 2011 and follows the death of John Bartlett, an Independent councillor and former cabinet member.
  • Hampshire county council: Vacancy in Andover South division after the death of Conservative councillor David Kirk. Term ends 2013.
  • Medway council: Vacancy in River ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Craggs, who was a councillor for only 13 days. He was advised that he could not serve as a councillor and a Special Constable at the same time. Term ends May 2011.
  • Oxford city council: Byelection on 21 October in Barton and Sandhills ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat deputy leader Patrick Murray who is moving out of the city. Term ends 2012.
  • Rushmoor borough council: Byelection on 23 September in Wellington ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Francis Williams. Term ends 2011.
  • Thanet district council: Ewen Cameron, who was elected as a Conservative in Bradstowe ward, has resigned the whip after being charged with drink-driving.
  • Tunbridge Wells district council: Byelection on 7 October in St James ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Mary Lewis. Term ends 2012.
  • West Sussex county council: Byelection on 7 October in Maidenbower division due to the impending resignation of former council leader Henry Smith, who is now MP for Crawley. Term ends 2013.
  • Winchester city council: Byelection on 14 October in St Paul ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Karen Barratt. If the Liberal Democrats do not win, then they will lose their majority on the council. Term ends May 2011.

  • Edinburgh city council: Labour Party candidate Bill Cook was elected councillor for Liberton and Gilmerton ward on 9 September, holding the seat for his party.
