The latest information about other local council electoral matters is as follows:
- Bassetlaw district council: Byelection on 16 September in Worksop South ward after the death of Conservative councillor Michael Bennett. Term ends 2012. There is also a vacancy in Harworth ward after the resignation of Labour councillor John Clayton. Term ends May 2011.
- Blaby district council: Byelection on 7 October in Saxondale ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Alexandra Dilks. Term ends May 2011.
- North East Derbyshire district council: Byelection on 23 September in Gosforth Valley ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Walter Pryce. Term ends
- Nottinghamshire county council: Byelection on 16 September in Worksop West division after the death of Conservative councillor Michael Bennett. Term ends 2013.
East of England
- Cambridgeshire county council: Byelection on 16 September in East Chesterton division after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Siep Wijsenbeek. Term ends 2013.
- Norwich city council: The 13 councillor election held on 9 September resulted in 7 Labour, 5 Green Party and one Liberal Democrat being elected. The result is likely to mean that the minority Labour administration in the city continues.
- Watford borough council: Byelection on 14 October in Central ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Sheila Smillie who is moving to Florida. Term ends May 2011.
- Hackney borough council: Byelection on 16 September in New River ward after the death of Conservative councillor Maureen Middleton. Term ends 2014.
- Kensington and Chelsea borough council: There are two byelections on 16 September, in Earls Court and Cremorne wards, after the resignations of Conservative councillors Barry Phelps and Mark Daley respectively. Both terms end in 2014.
- Tower Hamlets borough council: Following the referendum vote in favour of establishing the position, the election of an executive Mayor for Tower Hamlets will be held on 21 October.
- Waltham Forest borough council: A recount has confirmed that there was an error in the original result declared for High Street ward in May, adding 1000 votes to the Labour total which were not actually given. As a result Labour councillor Steve Terry has had his election declared undue and Liberal Democrat candidate Mahmood Hussain has been duly elected.
- Durham county council: Byelection on 30 September in Brandon ward, after the death of Labour councillor Ronnie Rodgers. A fortnight later on 14 October there will be a byelection in Deneside ward after the death of Labour former council leader Albert Nugent. Both terms end in 2013.
- Gateshead borough council: There are two byelections on 23 September. That in Lobley Hill and Bensham ward comes after the death of Labour councillor and former Mayor Frank Donovan and the term ends May 2011. That in Saltwell ward comes after the resignation of Labour councillor Ian Mearns, now Member of Parliament for Gateshead, and the term ends in 2012.
- Middlesbrough borough council: Bill Hawthorne, who stood as an Independent candidate, was elected councillor for Ayresome ward on 9 September. The seat he won had originally been won by another Independent who had later defected to Labour.
- North Tyneside borough council: Byelection on 30 September in Battle Hill ward following the resignation of Labour councillor Mary Glindon, now MP for North Tyneside. Term ends May 2011.
- Northumberland county council: Vacancy in Ponteland East division after the death of Conservative councillor Mel Armstrong. Term ends 2013.
- Stockton-on-Tees borough council: There are two vacancies. That in Ingleby Barwick East ward is caused by the resignation of Ingleby Barwick Independent Society member Andrew Larkin. That in Mandale and Victoria ward comes after the death of councillor Allison Trainer, who was a member of the Thornaby Independent Association. Both terms end in May 2011.
- Blackburn with Darwen council: Following the recent break-up in the For Darwen Party, an emergency council meeting will be held on Tuesday 14 September at which the Labour Group will attempt to take over the council. The Mayor of Blackburn, Conservative councillor Sheila Williams, is ill and will not be present.
- Carlisle city council: Byelection on 16 September in Stanwix Urban ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor John Stevenson, now MP for Carlisle. Term ends 2012.
- Cheshire East council: Byelection on 30 September in Alderley ward after the death of Conservative councillor Liz Gilliland. Term ends May 2011.
- Cumbria county council: Mike Johnson, the Conservative Party candidate, was elected councillor for Aspatria and Wharrels division on 9 September, holding the seat for his party.
- Fylde borough council: Karen Henshaw, of the Liberal Democrats, was elected councillor for Kilnhouse ward on 9 September, gaining the seat from the Conservatives.
- Knowsley borough council: Byelection on 16 September in Park ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Margaret Dobbie. Term ends May 2011.
- Lancaster city council: Byelection on 7 October in Harbour ward after the death of Morecambe Bay Independent councillor John Barnes. Term ends May 2011.
- Liverpool city council: Vacancy in Croxteth ward, after the death of Labour councillor and Deputy Lord Mayor Rose Bailey. There is expected to be a double vacancy election due to the impending resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Phil Moffatt who is moving to Northern Ireland. Terms end 2011 and 2012.
- Preston city council: Byelection on 16 September in Cadley ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Mike Onyon. Term ends 2012.
- Rossendale borough council: There are two byelections on 7 October. In Healey and Whitworth ward, Labour councillor Roger Wilson has resigned from a term due to end in May 2011; in Irwell ward, Conservative councillor Michael Christie has resigned from a term due to end in 2014, for health reasons.
- St Helens borough council: There is a byelection on 14 October in Billinge and Seneley Green ward, following the death of Richard Ward. There is also a vacancy in Haydock ward following the death of the longest serving councillor in the country, Jim Caunce. Both were Labour councillors and were serving in terms due to end in 2012.
- Tameside borough council: Byelection on 30 September in Longdendale ward after the death of Labour councillor Roy Oldham, who was leader of the council for 30 years. Term ends 2014. The byelection is likely to be held on 30 September.
- Wyre borough council: Byelection on 7 October in Tithebarn ward after the death of Conservative councillor Peter Hawley. Term ends May 2011.
- Chiltern district council: Vacancy in Ashley Green, Latimer and Chenies ward after the death of Conservative councillor Graham Sussum. Term ends May 2011.
- Crawley borough council: Byelection on 7 October in Tilgate ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Lawrence Taylor due to work commitments. Term ends 2012.
- Elmbridge borough council: There are two vacancies. That in Hersham North is for a term ending in 2012 and arises from the resignation of Conservative councillor Doug Packer, who is moving out of the borough; that in St George’s Hill ward is for a term ending May 2011 and follows the death of John Bartlett, an Independent councillor and former cabinet member.
- Hampshire county council: Vacancy in Andover South division after the death of Conservative councillor David Kirk. Term ends 2013.
- Medway council: Vacancy in River ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Craggs, who was a councillor for only 13 days. He was advised that he could not serve as a councillor and a Special Constable at the same time. Term ends May 2011.
- Oxford city council: Byelection on 21 October in Barton and Sandhills ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat deputy leader Patrick Murray who is moving out of the city. Term ends 2012.
- Rushmoor borough council: Byelection on 23 September in Wellington ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Francis Williams. Term ends 2011.
- Thanet district council: Ewen Cameron, who was elected as a Conservative in Bradstowe ward, has resigned the whip after being charged with drink-driving.
- Tunbridge Wells district council: Byelection on 7 October in St James ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Mary Lewis. Term ends 2012.
- West Sussex county council: Byelection on 7 October in Maidenbower division due to the impending resignation of former council leader Henry Smith, who is now MP for Crawley. Term ends 2013.
- Winchester city council: Byelection on 14 October in St Paul ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Karen Barratt. If the Liberal Democrats do not win, then they will lose their majority on the council. Term ends May 2011.
- Cheltenham borough council: Vacancy in Springbank ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor John Morris. Term ends 2012.
- Exeter city council: The election of 12 councillors for the 2010-2014 term on 9 September resulted in 7 Labour, 3 Conservatives and 2 Liberal Democrats being elected; the byelection in Topsham for a two year term saw Margaret Baldwin (Conservative) hold the seat for her party. The result makes Labour the largest party on the council and may well lead to a change of administration to a minority Labour.
- Herefordshire council: Byelection on 14 October in St Nicholas ward, after the death of Independent councillor David Benjamin. Term ends May 2011.
- Poole council: Liberal Democrat candidate Jo Clements was elected councillor for Newtown ward on 9 September, holding the seat for her party.
- Sedgemoor district council: Byelection on 30 September in Woolavington ward after the death of Labour group leader Roger Lavers. Term ends May 2011.
- Teignbridge district council: Byelection on 23 September in Ipplepen ward after the death of Conservative councillor Victor Elliott. Term ends May 2011.
- Sandwell borough council: Elaine Costigan, who was elected for the Conservatives in Wednesbury North ward and was deputy leader of her party group, has joined the Labour Party over the Government’s decision to cancel the Building Schools for the Future programme in Sandwell.
- Walsall borough council: Vacancy in Rushall-Shelfield ward after the death of Conservative councillor Albert Griffiths. Term ends May 2011.
- Leeds city council: Byelection on 14 October in Guiseley and Rawdon ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Stuart Andrew, now MP for Pudsey. Term ends May 2011.
- Scarborough borough council: Byelection on Friday 24 September in Eastfields ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Brian O’Flynn. Term ends May 2011.
- Rotherham borough council: Darren Hughes, who was elected for the Conservatives in Anston and Woodsetts ward, has joined the Labour Party.
- Sheffield city council: Byelection on 21 October in Manor Castle ward after the death of Labour councillor and former council leader Jan Wilson. The term ends in 2014.
- York city council: Vacancy in Hull Road ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Roger Pierce due to ill health. Term ends May 2011.
- Carmarthenshire county council: Vacancy in Cenarth ward after the death of Independent councillor Haydn Jones. Term ends 2012.
- Gwynedd county council: There are two byelections. On 30 September, Bowydd and Rhiw ward will poll after the resignation of Llais Gwynedd councillor Dafydd Hughes. A week later on 7 October, Seiont ward will poll after the death of Independent councillor Bob Anderson. Both terms end in 2012.
- Isle of Anglesey council: Vacancy in Rhosneigr ward after the resignation of ‘Original Independent’ councillor and former council leader Phil Fowlie, due to ill health. Term ends 2012.
- Neath Port Talbot county borough council: Vacancy in Neath North ward after the death of Labour councillor Mannie Loaring. Term ends 2012.
- Swansea city council: Vacancy in Newton ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Susan Waller. Term ends 2012.
- Edinburgh city council: Labour Party candidate Bill Cook was elected councillor for Liberton and Gilmerton ward on 9 September, holding the seat for his party.
