Following his arrest on Friday as part of a corruption investigation, the directly-elected Mayor of Stoke city council Mark Meredith (Labour) has decided to step down from his responsibilities. He will retain the formal title and post of Mayor until his term expires in May, but deputy mayor Mohammed Pervez will now chair the executive and take Mayoral decisions. Cllr Pervez is also a Labour Party member.

It is past time to catch up with some changes in Welsh local authorities. Geoffrey Hibbert, a longstanding councillor for St Martin’s ward in Caerphilly county borough council, has died, which will precipitate a byelection in due course.

Peter Foley, elected as a Liberal Democrat from Morfa ward to Bridgend county borough council, has left the group and is sitting as an Independent. In Pandy ward of Conwy county borough council, Bill Roberts, who was sitting as an Independent, is now part of the Plaid Cymru group.
