Forthcoming byelections in principal local authorities, and seats vacant, appear to be as follows:

  • Daventry district council: Drayton ward, after the disqualification of Terry Mullett who has been sentenced to 18 weeks’ imprisonment for benefit fraud; background checks also revealed that he was disqualified from election. He was a Conservative when first elected but had recently been sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2011.
  • Daventry district council: Yelvertoft ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Kay Hemmings. Term ends May 2010.
  • Harborough district council: Market Harborough Welland ward, after the resignation of Bev Field (Liberal Democrat) who is moving out of the district. Term ends 2011.
  • Leicester city council: Castle ward, after the resignation of Matt Follett who was Leader of the Green Party group. Term ends 2011.
  • South Tyneside borough council: Westoe ward, after the Independent councillor Allen Branley was disqualified for not attending a council meeting in six months. He is standing again in the byelection. Term ends 2012.
  • Stockport borough council: Cheadle and Gatley ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Brian Millard, who was Leader of the Council in 2005-07. Term ends in May next year.
  • Wyre Forest borough council: Lickhill ward, after the death of Jill Fairbrother-Millis of the Kidderminster Hospital and Health Concern group. Term ends 2011.
  • City of York council: Heworth ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Paul Blanchard who has recently been declared bankrupt and is moving to London. Term ends 2011.

  • Bedford borough council: There will be a byelection for the post of Mayor of Bedford, following the death of Frank Branston who had held the post since it was established. Branston was elected under the banner of his own party, the Better Bedford Independent Party. In the interim, deputy Mayor Nicky Attenborough (Conservative) will be in charge. Term ends 2011.
