Forthcoming byelections

Here are the vacancies and forthcoming byelections:

9 October

• Bristol city council: St George West ward, after the death of John Deasy (Labour). Term ends 2011.
• Cheshire county council: Knutsford division, following the death of veteran Conservative councillor Bert Grange. Term ends June 2009.
• Cheshire East shadow unitary council: Knutsford ward, also following the death of Bert Grange. Term ends 2011.
• East Hampshire district council: Holybourne and Froyle ward, following the resignation of Conservative councillor David O’Donnell. Term ends 2011.
• Haringey borough council: Alexandra ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat deputy leader Wayne Hoban who is moving to Worthing. Term ends 2010.
• Isle of Wight council: Mount Joy ward, after the resignation for family reasons of Melanie Swan who had been elected as a Conservative but had left the group. Term ends June 2009.
• Kent county council: Herne Bay division, after the death of John Law (Conservative). Term ends June 2009.
• Southwark borough council: Rotherhithe ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Anne Yates. Term ends 2010.
• West Lindsey district council: Middle Rasen ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat Gary Fenwick. Term ends 2011.

16 October

• Kirklees borough council: Dewsbury East ward, after the resignation of Colin Auty who was sitting as an Independent but was elected as a member of the British National Party. Term ends 2010.
• Redcar and Cleveland council: South Bank ward, after the resignation of Pearl Hall (Labour) who is emigrating to Australia. Term ends 2011.
• Tewkesbury borough council: Churchdown Brookfield ward, following the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Loraine Yates. Term ends 2011. If the Conservatives win the seat they will have an overall majority and may seek to take single-party power.
• Watford borough council: Tudor ward, after the resignation of Independent (former Liberal Democrat) Hugh O’Hanlon. Term ends 2012.

23 October

• Charnwood borough council: Loughborough Dishley and Hathern ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Sharon Williams which is connected to plans for housebuilding by the Conservative administration of the council. Term ends 2011.
• Chichester district council: East Wittering ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Sevey Mastronardi. Term ends 2011.
• East Dorset district council: Alderholt ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Cozier. Term ends 2011.
• Merthyr Tydfil county borough council: Town ward, after the resignation of Kurt Morgan (Liberal Democrat). Term ends 2012.
• Ribble Valley district council: Billington and Old Langho ward, after the resignation of Graham Sowter of the Liberal Democrats. Term ends 2011.
• Spelthorne borough council: Ashford East ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Patricia Weston. Term ends 2011.
• Westminster city council: Lancaster Gate ward, caused by the resignation of Sir Simon Milton (Conservative) on appointment as Deputy Mayor of London for Policy and Planning. Term ends 2010.
• Wolverhampton city council: Wednesfield North, after the resignation of David Bourne who was elected as a Conservative. Term ends 2010.
• Wolverhampton city council: Wednesfield South, after the resignation of Carol Bourne who was elected as a Conservative. Term ends 2011.

30 October

• Allerdale borough council: Workington St Johns ward, following the death of Conservative councillor John Heathcote. Term ends 2011.
• Brentwood borough council: Hutton South ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Frank Kenny, said to be connected to internal strife in the Conservative group. Term ends 2012.
• Camden borough council: Kentish Town ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Philip Thompson who has begun a university course in Arizona, USA. Term ends 2010.
• South Oxon district council: Thame North ward, after the resignation of Richard Walker (Conservative). Term ends 2011.

6 November

• Edinburgh city council: Forth ward, after the death of Elizabeth Maginnis who was a Labour councillor. Term ends 2012.
• Rutland county council: Whissendine ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Loretta Marsh. Term ends 2011.
• Waltham Forest borough council: Valley ward, after the death of Conservative councillor John Gover. Term ends 2010.

13 November

• Boston borough council: Fenside ward, after the resignation of Guy Curley who was a member of the Boston Bypass Independents. Term ends 2011.
• Hinckley and Bosworth district council: Markfield, Stanton and Field Head ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor John Cort. Term ends 2011.

Undated

• Bradford city council: Bingley ward, caused by the resignation of Conservative councillor and former cabinet member for education Colin Gill. Term ends 2012.
• Colchester borough council: Birch and Winstree ward, after the death of Peter Crowe who was the incumbent Mayor of the borough. Crowe was elected as a Conservative. Term ends 2011.
• Cumbria county council: Kells and Sandwith division, after the death of Labour councillor Joe McAllister. Term ends June 2009.
• Darlington borough council: North Road ward, after independent councillor Stephen Jones was disqualified for not attending a meeting for six months. He was leader of the Liberal Democrats on the council but was expelled from the party over signing the nomination papers for a British National Party candidate. Term ends 2011.
• Devon county council: Exminster and Kenton division, after the sudden death of Brian Berman (Liberal Democrat). Term ends June 2009.
• Glasgow city council: Bailieston ward, after the death of veteran Labour councillor Dougie Hay. Term ends 2012.
• Kent county council: Maidstone Rural East division, after the death of former council and Local Government Association leader Sandy Bruce-Lockhart (Conservative). Term ends June 2009.
• Newark and Sherwood district council: Clipstone ward, after the death of Len Sprigg who was deputy leader of the Independent group. Term ends 2011.
• Newcastle-on-Tyne city council: Fenham ward, after the death of Labour councillor Terry Cooney, who was Lord Mayor in 1989-90. Term ends 2011.
• North Somerset council: Clarence and Uphill ward, after the resignation of former Conservative council leader Mike Roe. Term ends 2011.
• Rhondda Cynon Taff county borough council: Glyncoch ward, after the death of Labour councillor Judith Burford. Term ends 2012.
• Rugby borough council: Avon and Swift ward, after the death of Hazel Bell (Conservative). Term ends 2010. The byelection had been called for 23 October but on investigation the voters whose signatures appeared on the letter calling the byelection had been forged.
• Salisbury district council: St Martin and Milford ward, after the death of Labour councillor Simon Howarth. Term ends 2011.
• Sedgefield district council: Sedgefield ward, after the death of Independent councillor Jim Wayman. Cllr Wayman died in January and the authority is due to be abolished next spring so it may be that the seat will be left unfilled.
• Teignbridge district council: Kenn Valley ward, also after the death of Brian Berman (Liberal Democrat). Term ends 2011.

There is an impending vacancy in Ballochmyle ward of East Ayrshire council where former Labour group leader Eric Jackson has announced that he will resign on 10 October.
