No seats changed hands in byelections held on 11 September. The Liberal Democrats kept Newpark ward on Harrogate borough council and Stoke ward on Guildford borough council, while the Conservatives held Guisborough ward on Redcar and Cleveland council.

In other local electoral news, the Conservative/Liberal Democrat ruling coalition on Cumbria county council has broken up after seven years and the result is that a minority Labour administration has taken power under Stewart Young. Although standing orders say that an all party administration should be formed, the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives have refused to nominate.

Cllr Tony Powell, who was Liberal Democrat leader on Caradon district council in Cornwall but left the party a year ago, has now joined the Conservative Party.
