Forthcoming byelections

This is the current state of play with vacancies and byelections on principal British local authorities:

28 August

• Rotherham borough council: Wickersley ward, following the resignation of Beryl Billington of the Labour Party. Her term would have lasted until 2010.
• Shrewsbury and Atcham borough council: Pimhill ward, after the death of Brian Rees (Conservative). The term will last only until next year when the authority is abolished.

4 September

• Barrow borough council: Newbarns ward, due to the death of Conservative councillor Colin Liversedge. The term lasts to 2011.
• Harborough district council: Broughton Astley – Broughton ward, after the death of Christopher Sidey (Conservative). His replacement serves until 2011.
• Havant borough council: Waterloo ward, caused by the death of Conservative councillor Wendy Brown. The new councillor will serve until 2010.
• Melton borough council: Egerton ward, caused by the resignation of Brenda Smith (Labour). The winner serves until 2011.

11 September

• Guildford borough council: Stoke ward, following the resignation of Alan Muhammed of the Liberal Democrats. His replacement will serve until 2011.
• Harrogate borough council: Newpark ward, following the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor John Lockhart. The new councillor sits until 2011. If the Conservatives gain the seat, they will have an overall majority on the council.
• Redcar and Cleveland council: Guisborough ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Anne Franklin. The new councillor will have a seat until 2011.

18 September

• Glasgow city council: Bailieston ward, caused by the resignation of John F. Mason on his election as MP for Glasgow East. The election is for a term ending in 2011.
• Leeds city council: Farnley and Wortley ward, due to the resignation of Green Party councillor Luke Russell. The winner will sit until 2010.
• Pembrokeshire county council: St Dogmaels ward, caused by the resignation of Liz Campion of the Liberal Democrats. The term ends in 2012.
• Suffolk county council: Woodbridge division, due to the resignation of Ben Redsell (Conservative). The term ends in June next year.
• Suffolk Coastal district council: Woodbridge Riverside ward, also due to the resignation of Ben Redsell. This term is scheduled to end in 2011 but may be brought to an end earlier if local government reorganization in Suffolk goes ahead.

25 September

• Camden borough council: Hampstead Town ward, after the resignation of Mike Greene (Conservative) who is seeking selection as Parliamentary candidate for Bournemouth West. Term ends 2010.
• Greenwich borough council: Plumstead ward, after the death of Labour councillor Kanta Patel. Term ends 2010.
• Herefordshire county council: Leominster South ward, following the death of Richard Burke (Conservative). Term ends 2011.
• Stevenage borough council: Pin Green ward, after the death of Labour councillor Reg Smith. Term ends 2011.
• Swale borough council: Minster Cliffs ward, after the resignation of Chris Boden who was a member of local party Sheppey First!. Term ends 2011.
• Swale borough council: Sheerness East ward, after the resignation of Gemma Wray, also a member of Sheppey First!. Term ends 2011.
• Wealden district council: Alfriston ward, after the resignation of the council’s former deputy leader Keith Whitehead (Conservative). His successor will sit until 2011.
• Winchester city council: Colden Common and Twyford ward, following the resignation of Jim Wagner (Liberal Democrat). The term lasts until 2011.

Undated

• Braintree district council: Witham West ward, after the resignation “in disgust” of Conservative councillor Bill Rose. Term ends 2011.
• Bristol city council: St George West ward, after the death of John Deasy (Labour). Term ends 2011.
• Cheshire county council: Knutsford division, following the death of veteran Conservative councillor Bert Grange. Term ends June 2009.
• Cheshire East shadow unitary council: Knutsford ward, also following the death of Bert Grange. Term ends 2011.
• Haringey borough council: Alexandra ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat deputy leader Wayne Hoban who is moving to Worthing.
• Hillingdon borough council: West Ruislip ward, after the death of Solveig Stone of the Conservatives. Term ends 2010.
• Isle of Wight council: Mount Joy ward, after the resignation for family reasons of Melanie Swan who had been elected as a Conservative but had left the group. Term ends June 2009.
• Kent county council: Herne Bay division, after the death of John Law (Conservative). Term ends June 2009.
• Kent county council: Maidstone Rural East division, after the death of former council and Local Government Association leader Sandy Bruce-Lockhart (Conservative). Term ends June 2009.
• Lincolnshire county council: Bourne Abbey division, after the resignation of Mark Horn (Conservative). Term ends June 2009.
• Redcar and Cleveland council: Kirkleatham ward, after the death of Norman Davies (Labour). Term ends 2011.
• Rugby borough council: Avon and Swift ward, after the death of Hazel Bell (Conservative). Term ends 2010.
• Sedgefield district council: Sedgefield ward, after the death of Independent councillor Jim Wayman. Term ends May 2009.
• Southwark borough council: Rotherhithe ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Anne Yates. Term ends 2010.
• Swale borough council: Teynham and Linsted ward, after the death of Conservative councillor John Disney. Term ends 2010.
• Taunton Deane borough council: Ruishton and Creech ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Gwyneth Leighton. Term ends 2011.
• West Lindsey district council: Middle Rasen ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat Gary Fenwick. Term ends 2011.

There is likely also to be a vacancy on Westminster city council in Lancaster Gate ward, should Sir Simon Milton be approved as Deputy Mayor of London for Policy and Planning.
