Heworth without ward, York city council, following the sudden death of Bill Bennett (Conservative). The winner will serve until 2011.

Broomfield and the Walthams, Chelmsford borough council, caused by the death of Conservative councillor Alan Willsher who had only just been re-elected to a term ending in 2011.
Glastonbury St Edmunds, Mendip district council, caused by the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Nick Cottle. His term would have run to 2011.
Goodshaw ward, Rossendale borough council, caused by the resignation of Michael Ormerod (Conservative) who had emigrated to Italy. This is one of three Rossendale byelections caused by resignations of Conservative councillors. The term will end in May 2008.
Irwell ward, Rossendale borough council, following the resignation of Janet Farquharson (Conservative), one of three resignations on the council; she is moving to Scotland. The byelection is for a term ending in May.
Mochdre ward, Conwy county council, caused by the death of Labour councillor Sue Jones. The winner will be up for re-election next May.
Stonebridge ward, Brent borough council, caused by the death of Labour councillor Dorman Long. The winner will serve until 2010.
Warbreck ward, Liverpool city council, after the death of Liberal Democrat former Mayor Joan Laing. Her term was due to expire in May 2008.
Whitefoot ward, Lewisham borough council, caused by the disqualification of Sera Kentman (Independent, elected as Liberal Democrat) who has not attended a council meeting for six months. Her term would have run until 2010.
Whitewell ward, Rossendale borough council, also called after the resignation of a Conservative councillor, in this case Marlene Crosta who has been in ill health. The winner will fight for re-election in May 2008.
