Forthcoming byelections

The following byelections are known about. (Updated)

16 August

  • Fratton ward, Portsmouth City Council. This byelection is caused by the temporary disqualification of Liberal Democrat councillor Phil Shaddock (former Leader of the council) as a result of a Standards Board case. The term runs only until May 2008.
  • Lansdown, Park and Warden Hill division, Gloucestershire county council, caused by the death of Conservative councillor Alan Pearce. The seat will next be up in 2009.
  • Midstocket and Rosemount ward, Aberdeen City Council will be a first: the first byelection in Scotland since the electoral system was changed to the Single Transferable Vote. The byelection was caused by the death of Conservative councillor John Porter and the term runs to 2011.
  • Sheriff Hutton ward, Ryedale district council, caused by the death of Robert Wood (Conservative). His term would have lasted until 2011.

23 August

  • Squirrels Heath ward, Havering borough council, caused by the death of Conservative councillor Eddie Cahill. The winner serves until 2010.
  • Thedwastre South division, Suffolk county council, caused by the resignation of Sue Sida-Lockett (Conservative). Her term ran until 2009.

30 August

  • Loughton Alderton ward, Epping Forest district council, caused by the resignation of Terry Farr of the British National Party. The winner will serve until next May.
  • Newport North division, Isle of Wight county council, caused by the resignation of Julian Whittaker (Conservative). The term runs to 2009.
  • Remenham, Wargrave and Ruscombe ward, Wokingham borough council, caused by the death of Chris Schutz (Conservative). The winner will have a seat until 2010.

6 September

  • Crystal Palace ward, Bromley borough council, caused by the death of veteran Liberal Democrat (ex SDP, ex Labour) councillor Chris Gaster. The term runs to 2010.

13 September

  • Glastonbury St Edmunds, Mendip district council, caused by the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Nick Cottle. His term would have run to 2011.
  • Mochdre ward, Conwy county council, caused by the death of Labour councillor Sue Jones. The winner will be up for re-election next May.
  • Whitefoot ward, Lewisham borough council, caused by the disqualification of Sera Kentman (Liberal Democrat) who has not attended a council meeting for six months. Her term would have run until 2010.

20 September

4 October

  • Helensburgh and Lomond South ward, Argyll and Bute council, caused by the death of Ronald Kinloch who was an Independent. The term runs to 2011.
