Brighton and Hove Independents 2, Independent 1. City (status granted 2000) on the Sussex coast; a very cosmopolitan area. Resort town dependent on tourism and conferences, but also IT connected to the universities. In 2011 it became the first council to be controlled by the Green Party.

There are byelections in Kemptown and Queen’s Park on 2 May (both held by non-aligned councillors elected for Labour).
