Bedford

Independent 3. The county town of Bedfordshire, together with the northern part of the county. The area was called North Bedfordshire until 1992. Local newspaper boss Frank Branston led a successful petition for an Independent Mayor and served in the role from 2002 until his death in 2009; Liberal Democrat Dave Hodgson then took over until replaced by Tom Wootton in 2023.

Riverfield has a byelection on 2 May (held by the Liberal Democrats). Mohammed Mahboob Din (Queen’s Park) moved from Labour to Independent in November 2023.
