Independents 8, Independent Conservatives 3, suspended from the Conservatives 1. Southern Suffolk, including Constable country; Sudbury is the only large town. The council is in a partnership with Mid Suffolk; a referendum narrowly rejected merger in 2011.

Alan Ferguson (South Cosford) moved from Conservative to Independent Conservative in January 2018. Simon Barrett (Sudbury South) was suspended by the Conservative group for three months in December 2017. Labour gained Sudbury South from the Conservatives at a byelection on 7 September.
