Results
- Brighton and Hove: The byelection in East Brighton ward on 8 February was won by Nancy Platts. Labour hold.
- East Staffordshire: The byelection in Stretton ward on 8 February was won by Vicki Gould. Conservative hold.
- Eden: The byelection in Hartside ward on 8 February was won by Robin Orchard, widower of the late councillor. Conservative hold.
- South Staffordshire: The byelection in Codsall South ward on 8 February was won by Bob Spencer. Conservative hold.
- Staffordshire: The byelection in Codsall division on 8 February was won by Bob Spencer. Conservative hold.
- Weymouth and Portland: The byelection in Tophill East ward on 8 February was won by Kathy Garcia who had a majority of eight votes over Labour. Conservative gain from Independent.
- Weymouth and Portland: The byelection in Tophill West ward on 8 February was won by Kerry Baker. Conservative hold.
Changes of allegiance
- Thanet: The UK Independence Party group has split in two, after disputes over the draft local plan led to the plan being voted down in full council in January. This week the 12 councillors from the UKIP group who had voted against the plan formally left, and established the ‘Thanet Independent UKIP group’. As a result the position of council leader Chris Webb is endangered.
New vacancies
- Aylesbury Vale: Central and Walton ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Edward Sims for work reaons. Term ends 2019.
- Perth and Kinross: Highland ward, after the death of the Leader of the Council Ian Campbell, a Conservative. Term ends 2022.
- Thurrock: Ockendon ward, after the resignation of Thurrock Independents councillor Kevin Wheeler who was elected for the UK Independence Party. Term ends 2019.

- Bolton: The byelection due in Farnworth ward will be held on 8 March.
- Cheshire East: The byelection due in Bunbury ward will be held on 22 March.
- Chiltern: The byelection due in Ridgeway ward will be held on 22 March.
- Highland: The byelection due in Caol and Mallaig ward will be held on 5 April.
- Midlothian: The byelection due in Penicuik ward will be held on 22 March.
- Tameside: The byelection due in Droylsden East ward will be held on 8 March.
- Thurrock: The byelection due in Ockendon ward will be held on 22 March.
Other updates
- Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid has approved two mergers of district councils in Suffolk. The district of Forest Heath and borough of St Edmundsbury will form West Suffolk, while Suffolk Coastal and Waveney districts will merge to form East Suffolk. The first elections for the new councils will be in May 2019.
