The latest information about local electoral matters is as follows:

East of England

  • Epping Forest district council: Vacancy in Loughton Forest ward after the death of Loughton Residents’ Association councillor Colin Finn. Term ends in May.
  • St Edmundsbury borough council: Tony Brown was elected councillor for Haverhill East ward on 9 January. He gains for the UK Independence Party a seat previously held by the Conservatives.
  • Southend on Sea council: Byelection on 23 January in West Leigh ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Gwen Horrigan due to ill health. Term ends 2015. The Conservatives would lose their overall majority if they do not retain the seat.
  • Tendring district council: There are two byelections on 6 February. Peter Bruff ward follows the death of Conservative councillor Mitch Mitchell. St Johns ward follows the sudden resignation of the Leader of the council, Conservative councillor Peter Halliday, who has fallen out with colleagues and with the local Member of Parliament. Both terms end in 2015.

East Midlands

  • Amber Valley borough council: Byelection on 30 January in Heanor East ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Phil Hill. There is also a vacancy in Heanor West ward after the death of Labour councillor Bob Janes. Both terms end in 2016.
  • Charnwood borough council: Byelection on 20 February in Birstall Wanlip ward after the death of Conservative councillor Stuart Jones. Term ends 2015.
  • West Lindsey district council: Vacancy in Scotter ward after the death of Conservative councillor William Parry. Term ends 2015.

London

  • Bexley borough council: Vacancy in Sidcup ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Jackie Evans, due to ill health. No byelection will be held to replace her.
  • Brent borough council: Vacancy in Dudden Hill ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Rev David Clues, who has been living and working in Brighton since December 2011.
  • Havering borough council: Vacancy in Rainham and Wennington ward after the disqualification of Independent Resident councillor Mark Logan, who did not attend any meetings of the council in six months. As it is less than six months to the full council elections, there will be no byelection.
  • Lewisham borough council: Vacancy in Evelyn ward after the death of Labour councillor Sam Owalabi-Oluyole. As his term had less than six months to run, there will be no byelection.
  • Corporation of London: There are three vacancies on the non-partisan Common Council. Castle Baynard ward has a vacancy after the resignation of Ray Catt, and the wardmote has been scheduled for 7 February with polling on Monday 10 February in the event of a contested election. Portsoken ward has a vacancy after the resignation of Shadique Gani, and Cheap ward has a vacancy after the death of Robin Eve. All terms end in 2017.
  • Merton borough council: Chris Edge, who was elected for the Conservatives in Dundonald ward but left the party in May 2013 in a dispute over the group’s direction, has left the ‘Merton Coalition’ group and is seeking to rejoin the Conservatives.
  • Waltham Forest borough council: Vacancy in Higham Hill ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Geoff Hammond. As the vacancy occurred within six months of the end of the term, no byelection will be held.

Wales

  • Cardiff city council: Vacancy in Canton division after the resignation of Labour councillor Cerys Furlong. Term ends 2017.
  • Conwy county borough council: Byelection on 6 February in Betws yn Rhos division after the resignation of Independent councillor Dr Ahmed Jamil. Term ends 2017.
  • Flintshire county council: Vacancy in Mostyn division after the disqualification of Independent councillor Patrick Heesom. The adjudication panel initially disqualified Heesom in July; the order was stayed by the High Court when Heesom appealed but the stay has since been lifted. Term ends 2017.
  • Powys county council: Leader of the council David Jones was removed from office in a vote of no confidence on 10 January and replaced by Barry Thomas. Jones is a member of the Powys Independent Alliance while Thomas is from the Non-Political Group; the new administration is also supported by the Independent Group.

Scotland

  • East Ayrshire council: Vacancy in Kilmarnock North ward after the death of Scottish National Party councillor Andrew Hershaw. Term ends 2017. The ruling SNP/Conservative coalition would lose its overall majority if it lost the byelection.
  • Highland council: Impending vacancy in Caol and Mallaig ward due to the resignation of Independent councillor Eddie Hunter, expected to take effect in mid to late February. Term ends 2017.
  • Moray council: Byelection on 30 January in Buckie ward after the resignation of Independent councillor Anne McKay. Term ends 2017. The current Independent and Conservative administration would lose its overall majority if the new councillor does not support it.
  • North Lanarkshire council: Byelection on 23 January in Motherwell North ward after the death of Labour councillor Annita McAuley. Term ends 2017.
