The latest information about local council electoral matters is as follows:
- Ashfield district council: Robert Sears-Piccavey, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Underwood ward, has left the party to sit as a non-affiliated Independent councillor, although he will still sit alongside the Liberal Democrat group.
- Bolsover district council: Byelection on 25 August in Shirebrook South West ward after the death of Independent councillor Alan Waring. Term ends 2015.
- Gedling borough council: Byelection on 15 September in Phoenix ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Ian Howarth, who is emigrating. Term ends 2015.
- Lincolnshire county council: Vacancy in Sleaford West and Leasingham division after the death of the Deputy Leader of the council, Barry Singleton, who was a Conservative councillor. Term ends 2013.
- Mansfield district council: Vacancy in Park Hall ward after the death of Labour councillor Dorothy Beastall just a day after she was re-elected. Term ends 2015.
East of England
- Essex county council: Byelection on 8 September in Stock division after the disqualification of Lord Hanningfield who was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment for false accounting. Originally elected as a Conservative, he was sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2013.
- Fenland district council: Vacancy in Staithe ward after the death in a car accident of former Wisbech Mayor Roger Green, a Conservative councillor. Term ends 2015.
- Camden borough council: Byelection on 15 September in Highgate ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Michael Nicolaides. Term ends 2014.
- Islington borough council: Alice Perry was elected councillor for St Peter’s ward on 11 August, holding the seat for the Labour Party. Meanwhile Joan Coupland, who was elected for Labour in St Mary’s ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent citing a lack of support from the Labour group. The St Peter’s byelection was prompted by the resignation of her daughter, who is denying charges of expenses fraud.
- Royal Borough of Kingston: Byelection on 15 September in Surbiton Hill ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Umesh Parekh. Term ends 2014.

- Allerdale borough council: Byelection on 1 September in Keswick ward after the resignation of Independent councillor David Robinson, due to ill health. If Labour were to gain this ward they would attain an overall majority. Term ends 2015.
- Cheshire West and Chester council: Vacancy in Ellesmere Port Town ward after the sudden death of veteran councillor and Labour group leader Derek Bateman. Term ends 2015.
- Knowsley borough council: Byelection on 18 August in Page Moss ward after the resignation of Labour councillor and former Mayor Tommy Russell. Term ends May next year.
- Lancashire county council: Vacancy in Wyreside division after the death of Conservative councillor Bob Mutch. Term ends 2013.
- South Lakeland district council: Vacancy in Ulverston North ward after the death of Conservative councillor and former council leader Colin Hodgson. Term ends May next year.
- Adur district council: Vacancy in Cokeham ward after the death of Conservative councillor Norman Wright. Term ends May next year.
- Cherwell district council: Vacancy in Bicester North ward after the death of Conservative councillor Carole Steward. Term ends 2015.
- East Hampshire district council: Byelection on 15 September for two seats in Bramshott and Liphook ward, after the resignations of Conservative councillors Sam and Anna James. Both terms end 2015.
- Hampshire county council: Byelection on 15 September in Headley division after the resignation of Conservative councillor Sam James. Term ends 2013.
- Mole Valley district council: Vacancy in Bookham South ward after the death of chairman of the council Anne Howarth, who was a Liberal Democrat councillor. Term ends in May next year.
- Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council: George Fussey was elected councillor for Eton and Castle ward on 11 August, gaining for the Liberal Democrats a seat previously held by the Conservatives. Both he and his predecessor are teachers at Eton College.
- Bristol city council: Byelection on 8 September in Southmead ward after the resignation due to ill health of Liberal Democrat councillor Dr Jacqueline Bowles. Term ends 2013.
- North Devon district council: Christopher Turner was elected councillor for Fremington ward on 11 August. Like his predecessor he stood as an Independent candidate.
- North Somerset council: Byelection on 8 September in Backwell ward after the death of Independent councillor Tom Collinson. Term ends 2015.
- Birmingham city council: Impending vacancy in Sparkbrook ward due to the resignation of Respect councillor Salma Yaqoob due to ill health. Term ends 2014.
- Stafford borough council: Vacancy in Walton ward after the death of veteran Conservative councillor Mike Carey. Term ends 2015.
- Wolverhampton city council: Byelection on 15 September in Graiseley ward after the death of Labour councillor Dr Mohan Passi. Term ends 2014.
- North Yorkshire county council: Impending vacancy in Thornton Dale and The Wolds division due to the resignation of Conservative councillor Ron Haigh, who is moving out of the county to help care for his wife. Term ends 2013.
- Gwynedd county council: There are two byelections on 29 September. That in Diffwys and Maenofferen division follows the resignation of Llais Gwynedd councillor Richard Lloyd Jones. That in Penrhyndeudraeth division follows the resignation of Dewi Lewis of Plaid Cymru. Both terms end in May next year.
- Newport city council: Michael Brunnock, who was elected for Plaid Cymru in Tredegar Park ward, has joined the Conservative Party. He was the sole Plaid Cymru councillor in the authority.
- Argyll and Bute council: Vacancy in Oban North and Lorn ward after the death of Donald MacDonald, who was a member of the Scottish National Party. Term ends May next year.
- Edinburgh city council: Byelection on 18 August in City Centre ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor David Beckett, who is to attend a course at Harvard. Term ends May next year.
- Highland council: Labour councillor John Holden of Inverness South ward has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for fraud. If the sentence stands after his appeal he will be disqualified from membership of the council; he has meanwhile been automatically expelled from the Labour Party.
- North Ayrshire council: Byelection on 25 August in Saltcoats and Stevenston ward after the resignation of Labour councillor David Munn. Term ends May next year.
- Perth and Kinross council: Byelection on 15 September in Highland ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor Ken Lyall, who is disillusioned with party politics and is emigrating to Australia. Term ends May next year.
