The latest information about local council electoral matters is as follows:

East Midlands

East of England

  • Essex county council: Byelection on 8 September in Stock division after the disqualification of Lord Hanningfield who was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment for false accounting. Originally elected as a Conservative, he was sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2013.
  • Fenland district council: Vacancy in Staithe ward after the death in a car accident of former Wisbech Mayor Roger Green, a Conservative councillor. Term ends 2015.

West Midlands

Yorkshire and the Humber

  • North Yorkshire county council: Impending vacancy in Thornton Dale and The Wolds division due to the resignation of Conservative councillor Ron Haigh, who is moving out of the county to help care for his wife. Term ends 2013.

Wales

Scotland

  • Argyll and Bute council: Vacancy in Oban North and Lorn ward after the death of Donald MacDonald, who was a member of the Scottish National Party. Term ends May next year.
  • Edinburgh city council: Byelection on 18 August in City Centre ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor David Beckett, who is to attend a course at Harvard. Term ends May next year.
  • Highland council: Labour councillor John Holden of Inverness South ward has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for fraud. If the sentence stands after his appeal he will be disqualified from membership of the council; he has meanwhile been automatically expelled from the Labour Party.
  • North Ayrshire council: Byelection on 25 August in Saltcoats and Stevenston ward after the resignation of Labour councillor David Munn. Term ends May next year.
  • Perth and Kinross council: Byelection on 15 September in Highland ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor Ken Lyall, who is disillusioned with party politics and is emigrating to Australia. Term ends May next year.
