Norwich city council: The new Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, has said that the moves to make Norwich a unitary council in 2011 are “definitely off“, and he has ordered civil servants to look at how to cancel them.
Thurrock borough council: Stuart St. Clair-Haslam, who was elected as a Conservative councillor for Little Thurrock Rectory ward, has resigned the party whip and is to form an Independent Conservative group with Ann Cheale who left in March. The move wipes out the Conservative Party’s majority on the council and makes it uncertain who will be in charge after the annual meeting on 19 May.
Camden borough council: The election of three councillors for the Haverstock ward will take place on Tuesday 25 May after the death of sitting Liberal Democrat councillor Syed Hoque, who was a candidate for re-election.
Brighton and Hove council: Impending vacancy in St Peter’s and North Laine ward, where Green Party leader Keith Taylor intends to resign when he replaces Caroline Lucas as Member of the European Parliament. Ms Lucas was elected to the United Kingdom Parliament last week and the European Parliament now prohibits ‘dual mandate’ members. Term ends 2011.
Hastings borough council: The election of a councillor for Ore ward has been postponed until 17 June after the death of sitting Conservative councillor Roy Tucker who had been nominated for re-election.
Isle of Wight council: Byelection on 27 May in Ryde South ward after the disqualification of non-party councillor Adrian Whittaker, who has been given a suspended jail sentence. Term ends 2013.
East Dorset district council: Vacancy in Corfe Mullen South ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Stewart Hearn whose challenge for the leadership of his group was unsuccessful. Term ends 2011.
