Harrogate borough council: Newpark ward, following the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor John Lockhart. The new councillor sits until 2011. If the Conservatives gain the seat, they will have an overall majority on the council.
Suffolk Coastal district council: Woodbridge Riverside ward, also due to the resignation of Ben Redsell. This term is scheduled to end in 2011 but may be brought to an end earlier if local government reorganization in Suffolk goes ahead.
Camden borough council: Hampstead Town ward, after the resignation of Mike Greene (Conservative) who is seeking selection as Parliamentary candidate for Bournemouth West. Term ends 2010.
Sedgefield district council: Sedgefield ward, after the death of Independent councillor Jim Wayman. Cllr Wayman died in January and the authority is due to be abolished next spring so it may be that the seat will be left unfilled.
Westminster city council: Lancaster Gate ward, caused by the resignation of Sir Simon Milton (Conservative) on appointment as Deputy Mayor of London for Policy and Planning. Term ends 2010.
