The only byelection on 14 August saw the Labour Party win in Cilfynydd ward, Rhondda Cynon Taff county borough council, a ward previously held by a Liberal Democrat.

In defection news, Nawaz Ahmed, who had been elected as a Liberal Democrat on both Lancashire county council (Brierfield and Nelson North division) and Pendle borough council (Brierfield ward), has announced that he has joined the Labour Party. His move solidifies Labour control of the county council, which had been by a slim majority of one seat, and creates further difficulties for the Liberal Democrats in Pendle where they have minority control with only 19 out of 49 councillors.

Chris Maskell, a former Labour mayor of Reading borough council who had been dropping heavy hints about leaving the Labour Party, has decided to stay with his old party after all.
